Meet Greg Harbour – Skater, Punk Aficionado, Candy Fan!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

Yeah, we’ve taken a little break in the action On the Road, but we’re screaming back with a fucking vengeance! We’ve followed around a few bad boy rockers, guitarist for hot goth band Crüxshadows, funky Green Day opener Prima Donna, even a rock violinist, but not really anyone outside the field of music. So we though it was about fucking time we did. Mind you, we’re still all about blazing, rocking music and the people who create it, but it was time to play on a different stage … or shall I say park?

Our next victim … *erm* blogger … is Greg Harbour, who you may well already know and love if you dig some killer skating. If you know Greg, kick ass! Enjoy the next few weeks riding along with him as he does his badass thing. If you don’t yet know Greg, here’s a little taste to get you in the mood for the madness we’ll be bringing your way as Greg takes over this little corner of the ‘zine and goes On the Road With Stretch Fuck’n Jeans. We are expecting some crazy-ass shit going on guaranteed … you’re not gonna want to miss it.

First, a little video eye candy … Greg’s part in Null Skateboard’s “Null and Void”

Greg’s part in The Denver Shop’s “In Full Color” – You also get some brief footage at the start of when the tricks don’t go so smoothly before checking out how Greg really rips it up.

We had the chance to ask Greg a few questions and this is what he had to say for himself …

LS: I read that you just graduated college. How hard was that to do with touring? And … so we’ll be cliché here … what’s your major?

GH: The hardest part of touring and going to school is actually going back to school and getting the semister started again, i enjoy learning but being on a skate trip is one of the best things ever so getting motivated to settle down and do school work was the hardest thing to do.  And I majored in Political Science with a minor in Native American Studies; i figured i’m a pissed off punk rock kid and i just wanted to know more about why i’m so mad!

LS: Please tell everyone dreaming about touring, what it’s like being able to travel and skate? What has been the greatest moment of realization that it rocks to be you?

GH: Being able to travel and skate is bloody amazing! Basically we wake up, drive to a demo, skate and repeat, or when were on street skating missions we just wake up and skate, I love it.  The craziest trip i’ve been on was when we went to the Caymen Islands last year to skate the black pearl, that is one of the best parks ever and when you’re not skating you can go swimming in the ocean!!!

LS: What is your favorite trick? What’s the holy grail trick, the one you dream of doing?

GH:Double miller flip front disaster to back smith revert kickflip to fakie

LS: You have some totally badass taste in music. Which one band of your favorites is the one that makes you want to strap everyone down and make them listen? What song of theirs would you play first?

GH: That is such a hard question, there are so many… Prolly “I’ve Had It,” by Black Flag.  I know its typical but that band is so good, but heres a few bands everyone should listen to

-Negative Approach
-Tear it up
-Void
-The Rites
-Knife Fight

There are so many bands that are overlooked

LS:  What do you think is the most important or interesting thing to know about you?

GH: I really have no clue… basically i skate, go to shows, listen to records, hang out with my lady, hang out with our dog, drink a ton of coffee, and eat waaaaaaaaaay too much candy!!!

Greg had a chance to send us an initial shout out from the road, with the subject “It’s bloody cold out!!”
“Soooooooooo… We just started our winter tour for 1031 skateboards, its wicked fun and wicked cold! So far we’ve only had 3 demos and all of them have ripped! Were on tour with a legendary punk rocker Bill Danforth who rules, he’s been talkin a bunch about how he grew up with the guys in Negative Approach! He’s got a bunch of rad stories, Were gettin ready to skate another demo in like 10 minuites so i gotta go but i promise the next update i’ll send a bunch of photos in so you can see me sucking in full color!”

Join us each Wednesday as we join Greg On the Road! In the meanwhile, here’s some more eye-candy!

Oh Yeah Dave from Slayer !!! - click for full size

Hey everyone! Hope all of you are doing great! This was a hell of a month on my side…
So I kicked off the new year in Sacramento CA and, when I got back, I only had a few days to get ready for the NAMM show!
Yea my life is FUN! But that comes with a huge price of no sleep, no me time, no friends and no bunch of things…. but overall…. I do get to hangout with some amazing people that makes it all Worth it :)
First day at NAMM was the prep time because we were going LIVE from the second day. I walk into my hotel with my great friend, Jacklyn, no makeup on and pretty beat-up from the night before (had a show at the Whisky A Go Go) and who do I run into??? I run into all the guys from Hell Yeah! hahah I tried to hide behind my friend, but she is half of me, so that didn’t work so well… after saying hello to the guys we ran into our room and started getting ready. The first night we all just hooked up and talked about how we are going to work the next day. and that was pretty much it.

The second day was rush rush get ready time, so I put on my Lip Service and march out to the Convention. It was a blast! Got to hangout with Dave Mustaine, guys from Testament, Hell yeah, Morbid Angel and many many more :)

Me with Dave Mustaine! - click for full size

At night was our big NAMM Jam party! For you metal lovers out there, gotta tell ya it was fuckin awesome! let me just name a few who played that night… Megadeth, Slipknot, Scorpions, Slayer, Machinehead, Hellyeah and sooooooo many more ! Now remember, this was a JAM so we had at least 1 or more band members from each band, playing all sorts of music! and my favorite was Iron Maiden songs :) by end of the night, Jose Mangin, my co-host was having wayyyyyyy too much fun so it was fun to watch him run around all crazy! I think we made a great team :)

The next day was the same… get ready and rush to the show… LIVE again! I just had soo much fun! but by Sunday, I was NAMMMMMED out!!! haha… and came back home :)

You guys can watch all the craziness on deanguitars.com/webcast and more will be added to youtube.com soon :)

I just want to thank all of you who have supported Metal and always will… the show was great and we had a shit load of viewers :)

I also have an announcement for you bands who are reading this…
If you like to play on one of my nights at the Whisky A Go Go, we are booking bands right now for these days :
February 9, March 28 , April 11. All dates hosted by Metal Sanaz! CALL WHISKY 310-652-4202 to get in and play those any of those nights . APRIL 11 IS MY BIRTHDAY! So that one is Super Special ;)

And if you are not in a band, make sure to still get your butts out and party with us and support your Metal Scene :)

See you soon and keep coming back for more updates of my life !

I'm happy :)

New Ink and New Lip Service costumes!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 by Mickey Finn

Wow what a weekend!!

Angelic, Snow Bunny - see full size in gallery below

Another chapter in the “I love my life, you should too” story! After wrapping up another long week, I decided to get out of town and get some fresh mountain air! So I packed up the snowboards and my snow bunny, Angelic, and at the crack of dawn Saturday morning I headed up to Snow Summit at Big Bear. I know, I know, I hate getting up early on the weekends but for certain things it’s well worth it, and what can I say I’m a speed junkie!! Great fun, great day, back home for great food and great … yeah, well. you fill in the blank!

Sunday after pleasantly sleeping in I got a visit from my bro Voodoo from FastLane Tattoo in Corona (1426 W.6th st. #208 92882) who drew up a sick design for me and we got to putting that sucker on my leg in the comfort of my own house! Few hours and a couple 12 packs later the Rebels came by and we headed up to Newhall for our C.B.R. Gig at the VU Bar, which I’m told was an old trading post and holds the oldest liquor license in LA. Good vibe and cozy club with a fireplace and smoking patio. It was a rockabilly night and we were the only Psycho band that played but everyone was cool and we made some new friends and played a great show. Hard to go back to work on Monday………..unless you work at Lip Service!!

Voodoo from FatLane Tattoo giving me some new ink - see full size in gallery below

This week we welcome our new team member Maria Santilena, who comes to us from mega company “Leg Avenue” to help us lunch our new packaged costume line and manage the sales department. I enjoyed my first day with her, she has a great vibe and I feel will bring a lot of good experience to our family! Maria will accompany us to the Halloween & Party Expo in Houston this weekend. Our packaging with the hottest models and sexy as hell costumes is sure to blow people away at this trade show!! We also began assembling/building, the trade show booth for Magic in Vegas which we update and customize to have a unique and different booth for every show. The other sales reps are currently in Hong Kong for our first trade show there, and word is so far its going great!

Crazy weather this stormy week! Hail in Hollywood, Tornado warning in Long Beach??!?! WTF?!? I love the rain and storms though. Its a nice break from our otherwise consistently mild LA weather. It’s a good week to hit the movies, or just stay home and cozy up with your favorite kitty. And don’t worry we’ll be back to sunshine and non-stop parties soon enough. And as soon as I get back from Houston in a week I’ll be back up to Big Bear for some of that fresh snow that’s piling up all week!! Yehaw!!!! Life is good in LA!! Gotta love it!

‘Til next week

Peace Love and Freaky Fashion !!!

Wanted: Can you help us find these Original Cult members?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

We’re compiling the history of 25 years of Lip Service and need your help to do it. On our Wanted page, you will see photos of some of the very first members of the Original Cult: models, friends, staff, and even the first employee of the Lip Service store on Melrose. We would love to have their input and memories for our upcoming book but, sadly, we can’t track down their contact information. In a few cases, we don’t even have a name, just a photo, to work with in finding them. That’s where you come in.

Please take a look through the photos and, if you think you know the person shown, click the email us button beneath their photo. That will open an email with the right identification information in the subject line. Then, if you can tell us how to contact them, that would totally rock!

New photos will be added regularly as we organize our massive archives, so check back!

Thanks to all of you for your help in writing the history of our first 25 years!

So …

We’ve had lots of great milestones along the way and know you’ve had great milestone moments in Lip Service, too. We want to include them, too.

Was Lip Service there …

… at your wedding?
… your graduation?
… a landmark moment in your life?

We want to see it and read your Lip Service story!

Send us your photos, your memories, your stories to complete the history of 25 years of Lip Service.

So far, we have collected lippy tattoos, lippy weddings, lippy kids and closets full of lippy clothes! And we want MORE!

Do you have a kick-ass story about some amazing, funny, or utterly crazy thing you did in your Lip Service gear? Send us that too! If you have photos, even better!

Welcome to 2010!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by Mickey Finn

Mickey Finn and Cold Blue Rebels rock Bar Sinister

see full sized image - gallery links below

The year is 2010 and a group of cyber circuit renegades have taken over the internet……….

Ok, maybe not, but can you believe it’s 2010!! Did anyone else think there would be flying cars by now?!?

Well, not yet, but we do have a whole slew of futuristic gadgetry that we sometimes take for granted! My new DJ Hero for Xbox 360 being one of them!!! (thanks sweetie luv ya)!! Even after Dj-ing in the DnB club scene for 10 years and being capable of scratching and beat juggling for real this game is still fun as hell and extremely challenging!!

Oh well bottom line is another year is gone, and a fresh new start for all of us just beginning, my mind reels with all the promise this year holds and the goals I have ahead of me. Anyone make a resolution this year?!? I did not as they don’t seem to work for me. I think setting realistic goals is a better way to approach it.

So I hope you all had an amazing NYE and managed to stay out of trouble, DUI’s jail, ect.

I definitely did with my bands show at Bar Sin on Saturday being the crescendo of my week vacation from Lip Service! Big thanks to Tricia, and Vicky for making it possible and thank you also to everyone who came to check out the Cold Blue Rebels!! It seemed like we won a lot of new fans and we put on a hell of a show with our zombie dancers, on stage coffin antics and make up to accent our Blood, Guts and Rock n Roll approach to Spookabilly!! Our sexy ass zombie rebel dancers handed out Lip Service goodies and C.B.R. cd’s which disappeared into the crowd in seconds! Also big thanks to Jim and Michele from Plastic Hassle who came out to photograph and video our show. Some of the photos are up already (see gallery links below!) with more coming soon, and the video is being edited now and will probably be up on Youtube by the time this week’s column is listed so be sure to check it out!! (webmistress note: Here it is, straight from the Cold Blue Rebels’ You Tube channel!)

We have been asked to submit a song for and upcoming Socal Psycho/Punk compilation album, more on that later!!!!

see full sized image - gallery links below

Sunday was not enough time to recuperate from days of partying and so as of today I am still hurting and struggling to make it thru the day. But the show must go on with the most hectic 2 months of the year happening in January and February. My coworkers, the other 2 sales reps, will be leaving for a fashion trade show in Hong Kong a week from Wednesday, and I will join one of them in Houston for the Halloween and Party Expo the following week so its crunch time getting all of our samples in order.

I just came out of a meeting in which I saw samples for our first latex group which will be 7 styles total, very unique and not your typical latex designs. Also the new fishnet (which will come in white) and new matte veggie vinyl designed by one of our new assistant designers Michelle Uberreste way to go Michelle! and a group tentatively called “Cyber Sniper” designed by our newest assistant designer who has just been officially added to our team after an impressive trial run as an intern. Congratulations to Michelle Moon, who will also accompany myself and sales rep Wendi McDowell to the Halloween show to debut our new packaged costume line which she was involved in designing. This first round of 10 costume styles will be sure to impress and give retail stores another option to dress up there boring “Leg Avenue” filled walls!! You know Lippy will do it better with more and more styles added each season.

That’s all for this week fashion freaks, Drew just cracked the whip and I must now JUMP!!!

Lip Service Invades Bar Sinister for the Cold Blue Rebels Show!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

The Cold Blue Rebels utterly rocked Bar Sinister Saturday night! Lip Service webzine was there to snap as many photos as possible, film some video, and rock out to some badass phychobilly. As expected, Mickey Finn and the rest of the Rebels (Danny Dangerous on stand-up bass, Joe Normal on guitar, Spazz Draztik on drums) have put together a tight set of kick-ass songs. (Check out their tracks at their MySpace page.)

The night started with some drinking, meeting Cold Blue Rebel and Lip Service friends, and chatting while we met new people and snapped pics. Then, Constans took the stage to announce the show! The guys kicked into a raging set of brand new songs (they’re only a few months old, so it’s all new!) backed up by the sexy zombie coffin dancers.

Mid-way through the set, the dancers joined the throng to give out some Lip Service swag bags, which went damn fast! Mickey gave some CDs out from the stage and you wuld have thought they were cash from the rush of people shoving to grab a disc. Seriously, I was barely able to get a photo for all the shoving I was subjected to up front!

After their set of original tunes, the guys kicked into a wailing rendition of Folsom Prison Blues to wrap up a killer show. The crowd was screaming for more. I have to agree … I can’t wait to hear what they come out with next!

All in all, it was awesome night to kick off the new year with a fucking bang! Hope those of you who joined us had as good a time as we did and those who couldn’t make it join us for the next one. Cold Blue Rebels are definitely a band you want to see live! Keep your eye here on the ‘zine (and Mickey’s Corner) for new dates.

See you next time!
