The Devil Inside: Horror Legend Michael Berryman

Thursday, November 17th, 2011 by Chad Cherry

“GOD HATES THE LORDS OF SALEM.
NO ONE CAN DESTROY THEM.”

The Devil Inside:
Thursday, November 3. 2011 12:00 p.m… It’s storming outside.. I think I’ll call…

MICHAEL BERRYMAN

Michael John Berryman was born in L.A. California. Prior to acting and playing the menace in countless horror and sci-fi groovie movies and television, M.B. worked in the floral profession. Did I just write that correctly?

M.J.B. is probably best known for his role as Pluto in Wes Craven’s 1977 horror film The Hills Have Eyes and the 1985 sequel The Hills Have Eyes II. He appeared in the Academy Award-winning drama One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975 (!!!!). He has also made appearances in the Sci-Fi movies My Science Project, Weird Science, Armed Response, Evil Spirits and The Guyver. (I remember him in an X-Files episode too.) In 2005, he starred in Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and is currently doing Rob’s upcoming horror film The Lords of Salem. A coven of ancient witches will be paying a visit to the town of Salem, Massachusetts. (I love them already). A local DJ plays a cursed record and unwittingly unleashes a coven of 300-year old witches who were secretly imprisoned and tortured during the Salem Witch Trails. The Lords Of Salem is the third film from Haunted Films, the first two being Paranormal Activity and Insidious.

I also wanna talk about Michael’s roll as Gunnar in Justin Thomas Ostensen’s BELOW ZERO. I’m gonna givin’ him a ringy ding to see what’ shakin’. Penned by Signe Olynyk, Below Zero is the true-life story of Jack the Hack, a screenwriter with writer’s block who arranges to have himself locked in a meat cooler in order to meet a looming deadline. (Still ringing…) As the temperature drops, the lines between reality and fiction blur, and Jack’s story comes to life, exposing him to a world of horror that only a meat freezer can inspire.

M.B. Hello, Chad!

C.C. Hiya M.B.!!!

C.C. Hey Michael. First off, I wanna let the people know that you’ve been scaring the shit out of audiences for over 35 years, playing terrifying roles in horror and sci-fi cinema. Although, in reality you are a very sweet human being… And there’s no getting around it… You are actually a nice guy Michael. Sorry to blow your cover man.

M.B. Oh, gee. I agree with you. I’m very human each day and I think it’s something we should all strive for. I think it’s important. And thank you by the way.

C.C. I live by love and respect man.

M.B. I agree!

C.C. Let’s talk about the film you recently did in Canada called BELOW ZERO.

M.B. Well, I star in it with Edward Furlong and Kristin Booth and it’s a beautiful psychological thriller and I think we shot it in like 15 days, it was amazing. We threw ourselves into it and between the camera choices, the music and the art department it was wonderful. Eddie plays a screen writer that has writers block and his agent says “I’m gonna have you shipped off to the woods, your gonna be locked in a meat locker in a slaughter house and you can’t come out for 5 day until you have a finished manuscript other wise you won’t have an agent any more.” That’s kinda the premise, then things start to happen and you start to wonder “Is he losing his mind or is this what he’s writing?” Hmmmm? I’ve seen the movie a bunch of times and it was really well received at the Calvary Film Festival and at the Austin Film Festival most recently and right now it’s being pitched to the film market in Santa Monica. I love the independent film family.
This one is my best to date. I’m very proud of the roll. So have your fans go check it. It’s really a great movie and ya know what, you can watch it over and over and get something more out of it.

C.C. It was gonna be in 3D right?

M.B. They were thinking of 3D but the performances were so strong and the camera work was so well done that 3D would of been a distraction.

C.C. To me, that’s good news.

M.B. I’m not a big fan of 3D actually. I’ve never seen it really work properly. I did appreciate it as a kid seeing Jason and the Argonauts. That worked for me but at the end of the day if I was a producer or a director I wouldn’t waste my money on it.

C.C. Agreed.

C.C. You are working on a twisted witch movie called The Lords Of Salem as we speak. I’m sure you are under contract to not say much as of yet but can ya tell us a little bit about the character Virgil Magnus that you’re playing?

M.B. Well contractually I’m very limited of what I can speak of, I signed on the dotted line. I can say that I’m working with my good friends Rob and Sheri.. The Zombies. They’re very sweet people. Ken Foree is on board! My scenes are with my good friend Bill Moseley and we’re in the opening scene with a lil’ bit of the back story and I can’t say too much but it’s about the Salem witch trials and we get constricted with some trouble haha!

C.C. Don’t say any more! We won’t spoil any goods. I just wanted to talk about the utmost recent thing you’re doin’ and where you’re at right now.

M.B. I don’t even know what the rest of the story is. I don’t have the complete script haha.

C.C.  The Lords Of Salem will quite possibly be one of Rob Zombie’s darkest films. You must be thrilled.

M.B. I like working with Rob, his productions go very smooth, all his people he has on board are very gracious and professional. You’re in good company with Rob. I haven’t read to much about it, I like to come on board to a project and then focus on what my director needs.

C.C. And all of you guys get along really well.

M.B. We do. We are all friends and family. We do conventions together, we travel together, we’ve been friends for decades. I’ve been friends with Rob for about 5 years now and Bill Moseley, Ken Foree, Sid Haig and Kane Hodder and the rest are one big happy family. Kinda nice.

C.C. You guys are like the horror brat pack.

M.B. You’re right actually. That’s a great idea. I’ve been in discussions with my manager about me possibly hosting a t.v. series. The beauty of me doing film ya know, unless you are a young model or something, as a character actor I can play any role I want and if I get older that’s ok! I’m so glad I’m not a glamour boy cuz then I’d be beyond my glamour years.. And then I couldn’t get a job hahaha!

C.C. Works out perfecto!

C.C. On that note… Michael, how do ya turn from “professional floral man” to a “dangerous, maniacal, creepy, killer guy?”

M.B. Oh that’s a great question. Well I was never a florist, In high shool I was a flower delivery guy but however, I had a shop in Venice Beach and I was discovered by George Pal there. I wasn’t a florist but what I had was a shop called Avendas Gardens with a business partner and we had house plants and the local artist would put in their sculpture or their paintings, lots of local art stuff ya know. It was just a small, little store I had for about 8 months, didn’t make any money but it did put me in a location across the street from a store that sells very high end inequities to millionaires.

One of the owners’ fathers happened to be George Pal from Warner Brothers, the original producer of War of the Worlds, The Time Machine and Journey to the Center of the Earth. When I met George he said to me “ya know you have a unique look” and he was very gracious and he said “Look, I’m doin’ a movie called Doc Savage” and I was like ” I have those books!” and he says ” I’d like to hire you for two days to be the corner for Doc Savage’s father, here’s the scene and would you be interested please.” I said “Sure. Sounds like fun.” He got me my union card and I wound up having a couple 100 bucks in my pocket after it was done, worked for two days. And I was planning on being a feature photographer either in the northwest territory Yukon or Alaska because I’m a huge fan of the nature. It’s the most beautiful planet we’ll ever experience and we need to keep it genetically altered free if possible.

C.C. Indeed. I’ve wrote music with a gentleman you that you starred in a video with. So, I finally get to ask somebody the question that’s asked to me in every interview I do. What was it like working with Nikki Sixx haha? Smokin’ in the Boys Room haha.. You know I have to bring music into everything.

M.B. Those guys. The Crue are my buddies! They are so down to earth, so honest, so gracious. I didn’t know how it was gonna go on “Smokin’ in the Boys Room.” I’ve been around a lot of people in the rock industry before and some are like Ehhhhh, but with them, right from the get go it was honest, sincere, smiles, “hang with us back stage” here and we misbehaved a lil’ bit there and they were just cool guys and we had a lot of fun. And then at the end of the video when I wiggled my ears they loved it.

It was the most requested video on MTV for a long, long time. And when they cut the ear wiggle out after about a year of it being on MTV people complained so much and wrote all these letters that some body had to go to work and put the 4 seconds of ear wiggle back in the video. And I didn’t know if this was really true, I thought they were pulling my leg. Well one day I had to do some ADR voice over work on a movies called Penny Dreadful and while the guy was setting it up he said ” Hey I used to work for MTV and one morning I had to go to work and on my page it said I had to put back in Michael Berryman’s ear removal from Motley Crue’s Smoking in the Boys Room video…. 4 seconds.” Hahaha! I’m very proud of that Haha! Send the boys my regards. Wonderful guys.

C.C. Your top 3 favorite movies that might inspire you to be a creep in a flick? Who or what movie monster can scare Michael Berryman?

M.B. Well, I would have to say I really like Frankenstein and the Universal Classics, but the one that freaked me out the most is probably The Mummy.

C.C Boris!

M.B. Oh ya. Frankenstein was a sympathetic character. The Wolfman.. Well, I just wanted to BE a werewolf. But The Mummy was really creepy.. And when they would burn the scroll leaves, it just creeped me out. And then when I go older The Exorcist really messed with me. As a matter of fact I’m not ashamed to admit that after I saw the Exorcist (I forget how old I was I might of been 15 or maybe 16) I got on my knees to make sure it had more effect and said my prayers. I’m an ex alter boy, ex Catholic. It really had an effect on me. And the third one I’d have to say… Fox News.

C.C. I gotta wrap this up here. I thank you for your time Michael. I’m always excited to see ya on the silver screen and I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the shoot on The Lords Of Salem. You will no doubt make this flick excellent my friend.

M.B. Well thank you, I appreciate that. You’re a sharp guy and obviously a force to be. I salute you. And drop by my facebook BELOW ZERO sign on as a friend and say that ya wanna see this movie haha! I’m really, really proud of it. I think Eddie, Kristin and I knocked it out of the park. The performances are strong and it’s so well made, it’s just like wow! belowzeromovie.com

Michael and I rapped for quite awhile about the renaissance of 60′s and 70′s music that still holds strong today, how original music rules and formulated bands can be compared to fast food that will make you “artistically diabetic” (Brilliant quote by the way Michael!) Aurthor Lee of LOVE, folk rock, his sister being a mid-wife for John Densmore of The Doors, hanging with Joni Mitchell at The Troubadour, meeting George Harrison, Herb Alfred, Aaron Neville, That 70′s Show, Betty White, Corporate Doom, Satan’s Evil Spawn, our future for our children and our children’s-children, slaves to power and greed, figuring out heaven on earth, humanity, war, protesting and surviving, science, physics and chemistry, Thomas Edison’s lab assistant PHD Professor Mr. Kent, not turning planet earth into a toilet, HG.Wells, Marshall Mcluhan, the powerful influences of technology, gardening, standards, misuse of knowledge, fast food, life styles, Lou Ferrigno, The Devil Rejects, Matthew McGrory and Tiny, Drag Racing, health care, the back of M.J.B.’s Hard Rock Cafe jacket saying “Love All, Serve All, All is One.” blind faith, dead beat reality shows, writing books and Mick Mars. Good times.

Hey, It stopped storming out. That’s too bad.. I like watching the lightning strike the graveyard from Castle Cherry. (Makes for disconnected phone calls with Michael Berryman though..) Sooooooooo, I have noticed some of you are looking quite shabby. Stop that. Get some Lip Service clothes. Turn yer “shab into fab” bitches. Or I will fucking gut you like a fish and cut your eye lids in half… Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! Hahaha, I’m just kidding… I’ve just been spending too much time with Roger Labon Jackson.. He’s the real voice of Ghostface… And Mojo JoJo.. Don’t ask… Just get some Lip Service…. Clothing.

Also check out Berryman’s work.
He’s done a few movies if ya haven’t noticed. And I’m sure I’m forgetting some of them too! Michael say’s: “Love All, Serve All, All is One.” What a great guy!

New TLV video Starring Sybil Danning coming to the ‘zine!

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011 by TheWebMistress

Hey Lippy freaks! This is the webmistress, hijacking Chad’s creepy corner of the ‘zine because he’s busy in his evil lair, cooking up the next The Last Vegas video (starring the Queen of the Action Flicks and all-around badass chick, Sybil Danning!). You’ll see it here in the LS ‘zine on November 2nd … so kick your post-Halloween freakiness into bloody gear with Sybil and TLV (and lots of bloodshed and mayhem, along with some rock n roll that’ll kick your ass)!

I asked Chad about the video, and here’s what he had to say for himself.

“The run down of The Otherside vid is … Basically this deviant rock band is acting up in a sweet lady’s house with bad intentions … Long story short, the tables turn and she massacres TLV. Looks like our sweet lady is a brutal killer … Who knew? Hehehe!”

Checking out these stills the guys sent over, “acting up” and “massacre” are kind of an understatement. You can judge for yourself. Here’s a sneak peek at TLV’s Otherside video.

See all you ghouls and freaks November 2 …

Chad Cherry’s Mid-(ish)Year Review of the Year in HORROR

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 by Chad Cherry

THE DEVIL INSIDE ‘Special Trash Report’
Chad Cherry’s Over the Mid-(ish)Year Review in HORROR movies!!!

Hello my wonderful Lip Service deviants! I usually wait for a “year in review” for my fav movies, but we seem to be sailing along quite wickedly this year with horror goodies. So, here are some great horror flicks that have gotten C.C.’s stamp of approval already. I’ll only write of the worthy and what I’ve been digging ( besides graves) so far this year.

Here we go, creeps…

THE WARD:

Chad Cherry's Mid(ish)-year Review of the Year in Horror MoviesThe Ward is John Carpenter’s first full-length movie since ‘Ghost of Mars’ in 01. J. Carpenter still believes in telling a great story that will scare you without relying on cheap tricks and gore. Carpenter for me is like Star Trek for “Trekkies.” J. Carp forever.
The story is of a young institutionalized woman who is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As the evil creeps, the realization of this entity is darker than anything she could ever imagine.

THE WAKE WOOD:

Chad Cherry's Mid(ish)-year Review of the Year in Horror MoviesThe Wake Wood is UK and Irish co-production by horror giants Hammer Films.
A grieving couple, devastated by the loss of their 9 year old daughter, relocates to the remote town of Wake Wood, only to learn of a Pagan ritual that can give them 3 more days with their deceased offspring. Guess what happens when it’s time for her return?

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN:

Chad Cherry's Mid(ish)-year Review of the Year in Horror MoviesHobo with a Shotgun is a Canadian action exploitation flick based on the winning trailer of the same name from Robert Rodriguez’s SxSw grindhouse trailer contest.

Rutger Hauer. That’s all that really needs to be said to get you to watch this. Let’s see… I’ll try to explain… It’s an out of control, gleefully “gross as hell” homage to low-budget exploitation films. Gory with firepower. Ahhh, the sweet avenging… Hobo with a Shotgun…You know what yer gettin’ into with a title like that. Absolutely cool. Perfecto.

INSIDIOUS:

Chad Cherry's Mid(ish)-year Review of the Year in Horror MoviesInsidious is a supernatural horror film directed by James Wan of “Saw” movie fame.

Oh my goodness gracious!!! It’s NOT the house that’s haunted? Well then, what IS IT? What the HELL is happening here? What’s following this family? Ahhhhh!!!! When you move away from the evil demons and they follow you, you are in fucking trouble… Big time! Ok, I’m not gonna lie. I was actually freaked out by this one a lil’ bit. (How refreshing that was!) J. Wan found the right elements of fear, then slams you with it. I wasn’t expecting this to be so freaky. And I haven’t seen Barbara Hershey (hotter with age) in a scary movie like this since the brutally evil phantom rapist movie ‘The Entity.’ (Can’t stand those scenes in that flick.) This is a creepy good one kids.

RUBBER:

Chad Cherry's Mid(ish)-year Review of the Year in Horror MoviesRubber is a French horror comedy that I still can’t believe was actually made. Writer and director Quentin Dupieux went very, very, very far “outside the box” on this beast.

This film is about Robert. Robert is a tire that comes to life and embarks on a killing spree. He kills by vibrating intensely and psychokinetically causes peoples head to explode. He’s an angry bastard.. This flick is so out there that it’s kinda brilliant. The ending is priceless. Bizarre. Me likes.

_____________________________________________________________________________

There are a lot more doozies that I’ve seen so far this year, but I don’t feel the need to write about ‘em just yet. I think this is a good start if you’re gonna have a date night at home, a sleep over, seance, orgy, or just a relaxing taxidermy session. More movie mayhem to come.

Have I told you all lately how much I would like to drink your blood? Wait, that came out wrong.. What I meant to say is, thanks for supporting Lip Service and rocking out with The Last Vegas this summer. I really appreciate all the amazing feedback and can’t wait to drink your blood… Ummm sorry, I mean, I can’t wait to see you all on the road very soon.
Cheers, Chaddy Cherry.

The Steepwater Band: New Video – Remember the Taker

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 by Chad Cherry

Chad Cherry’s rock video invasion!

Hello, hello Boils and Ghouls!!!
It’s your old friend, Count Chaddy Cherry, comin’ at ya in the fine summertime heat! Kinda reminds me of my old stomping grounds back in Hell … Hell, Michigan (It’s near Detroit, ya cretins). In 2011′s glorious, firecracker month of July, I did not get the chance to write any fancy-pants interviews about your favorite sci-fi, horror playmates or lovable fiends in the genre you adore so immensely…

Oh no, not this month kiddies …

Ya see, I’ve been spending a lot of my time lately roaming the country-side, filming the “darkness.” Stalking tragically wicked places, haunted forests, abandoned gravel pits (fucking scary), run-down theaters, and all other random freaky-deaky action I could get my eyeballs on. Thus, I deliver the fragments of this reality caught on film to my laboratory, for the slicing and dicing.

“Cut it! Sew it back together! Cut it some more! MUAHAHAHA!!!”

I’ve been honing in on my mad scientist skills, again, bringing you all some different fodder to corrupt your sponge-like brains.. Mmmmmmm, brains … Anyway, I thought you Lip Service junkies would dig the fact that I got asked to do a rock video for The Steepwater Band. This is the vid for their first single, called “Remember The Taker,” from their new record “Clava.”

Sooooooooo for the latest installment of the “Devil Inside,” the almighty GuttyWorks Productions (J.R.Wolfenstein and myself – the fine weirdos who bring you “Ask Chad Cherry“) will premier this dread smack dab to you sexy creeps via the greatest clothing service known to wild hormones: Lip Service!!! It’s ALIVE!!! (Well it’s not really alive, it’s just a video. But the thing that’s sketchin’ in the corner of my lab is! Shit! I think I need to call an exterminator, the grizzly bear traps don’t seem to be working…)
[Memo: My grizzly traps are never used on real animals. Just people. Or my bastardized creations when they run amok.]

The only thing I don’t like about working with video is that the “cutting room” floor never really has any visible blood while I’m actually “cutting”… Hmmm, Oh well, I’ll change that soon enough.

Enjoy your righteous ways and stay cool in Lippy style you freaks I call friends. Oh ya, and enjoy my creation.

The Devil Inside: Sybil Danning – interview with Chad Cherry

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011 by Chad Cherry

QUEEN OF THE ACTION FLICKS

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineYour life is stellar!!! Why? Because, this month, you Lip Service cretins get to look at pictures of supremely talented, half naked HOTNESS! (You dirty bastards!) And you’re gonna learn about one of the sexiest action hero vixens who has ever dawned her powerful presence in the cult films your inquisitive eyeballs and creepy minds could not possibly live without! (And I know I’m not just yappin’ for myself here…)

Of course, I’m speaking of the Austrian actress known for her many roles in B movies, sci-fi, action, and horror films. Boils and Ghouls … Without further ado …  I give you the ever-so-stunning…
SYBIL DANNING.

Sybil became an actress after leaving home at the age of 16. Making her film debut in Komm nur, meins Liebstes Vogelein, portraying the legendary German mermaid “Lorelei” covered by only long blonde tresses. The next year she had a role in one of Robert DeNiro’s first movies, Sam’s Songs. She was cast in Blackbeard along with Raquel Welch, playin’ a high-caliber prostitute. The same year, she appeared in Eye of the Labyrinth, a giallo thriller. Then came The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, again with R.Welch… Oh ya!

She moved to Hollywood in ’78, leaving her friends and family in Europe behind to pursue her career with zero contract, zero agent, and zero idea what the future would bring. But the future was gonna be bright for this serious, educated, physically fit, politically aware, intelligent, and beautiful woman. The 5’7″ blue-eyed blonde embodied all the qualities to take over… and then some. After portraying an extraterrestrial Amazon named Saint-Exmin in the ’80 movie, Battle Beyond the Stars, she earned “The Golden Scroll Award Of Merit” from the Academy of Science-Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror films. Then on to a ton of crucial B films.

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineIn ’83 Danning appeared on the cover of the August issue of Playboy magazine. They christened her “Queen of the Action Flicks.” Next she co-starred with Christopher Lee in The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, playing Stirba, an evil werewolf queen. She then began hittin’ up American TV series. I loved her in The Fall Guy and V. I never missed an episode. She can be seen with rocker Wendy O. Williams (The Plasmatics) in Reform School Girls and, after sketch parody Amazon on the Moon, she founded her own company “Adventuress Production, Inc.” and produced “L.A. Bounty”, which she starred and helped write. She was the hostess of her own collection of 26 action-adventure movies baring the title “Sybil Danning’s Adventure Video” and had her first tailor-made action comic book “Sybil Danning is Black Diamond.” YA!

In the 90s Sybil ran into a setback. While rehearsing a movie stunt, she had an accident in a gymnasium. Forced to rest, she worked with writers on her first screenplay… But the pain worsened. Doctors misdiagnosed her condition and, finally, a surgeon recommended by Jack Nicholson discovered Danning had two severely-herniated discs. She underwent a series of epidurals, followed by traction, and spent over a year recovering.

But, as you all know, you can never keep a good girl down and Sybil rocked it back into public performance. Big time. She returned to the big screen most notably in the movie Grindhouse in a faux trailer titled Werewolf Women of the S.S. This was followed by her appearance in Rob Zombie’s re-make of Halloween. She appeared in the third season of the ‘here!’ series The Lair as Frav von Hess, a sinister vampiress out to kill the vamp whose influence over her son caused her transformation. Oh ya, and she played the succubus in the t.v. series Superboy. Always tough and very sexy dangerous.

Sybil has remained true to her portrayal of strong characters. She’s writing her autobiography and developing new projects she will produce and also appear.

I’ve touched base on one of her flicks in a past Devil Inside article (Werewolves), but came to the realization we need more S.D. in our lives. I thought I would get a more exclusive interview into the mind of a brilliant and talented actress to see what irons she has in the fire. Being the amazing friend she is, she agreed and it goes like this…

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineC.C. In most of your movies you play a sexy, dynamic, commanding, super-hero industrial strength woman. Strong roles. Do you ever wonder if this intimidates directors and producers?

SD – Gee, you noticed! No, I don’t think I have ever intimidated my directors or producers because they hired me to play such a role in the first place. If a producer decides to produce or a director decides to direct a movie with such a strong female character, they obviously like those kinds of female characters.  Chances are they probably have a strong female in their lives or wish they had. Thank God for writers who create those roles. In my case, sometimes they re-write them with the ok of the director and producer or even let me play a role written for a man.  It worked for Sigourney Weaver when the producer of ALIEN decided the lead role would be more interesting if played by a woman. Interestingly when interviewed by an L.A. Times journalist and asked if “she now thinks she will be categorized as Sybil Danning playing such roles since this was the first of its kind?” she took it in stride.

Talking about Directors, I loved your interview with my dear friend Penelope Spheeris.  She and I met at the Sundance Film Festival.  Loving her work I sent her a project on an “Icon and his band” which Penelope loves.  Music publishing has been negotiated and cleared.  We can’t say more right now but will once ready.

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineC.C. YeYeah!!! Not many actors get their own comic book such as “Sybil Danning is, Black Diamond.” We need more of this.

SD – Yes, my comic book was very successful which took me to the San Diego ComicCon Convention for the first time.  I will be there again next month, on Saturday, July 23 signing the release copies of my cult classic movie BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS on Blu-Ray.  My “Sybil Danning is, Black Diamond” was to become a female James Bond movie but when financing fell through, so too the comic book ended.  I have another exciting comic book in mind in the near future and will let you know.

C.C. I’m thinking you actually might really be a vampire. You’ve hardly aged. Sybil… Are you a vamp? (Hehehe)

SD – Nice pun CC. You’re right; I have been called a vamp.  The vampire part?  Who wouldn’t want to be one?  They’re beautifully pale, sexy, intelligent, successful and rich, not to mention eternally young and beautiful.  I love them and am producing a Vampire movie I will also be in.  However, instead of living the night life – I must have my nights rest to keep up my looks and keep up with my fans. Sophia Loren once told me as I was having lunch with her in her Villa in Rome, she always makes sure she has 7-8 hours of sleep a night and that is her beauty secret.  I agree.  Unfortunately until I’ve found a solution I will focus my vampirism on screen.

Sybil Danning and Sophia Loren - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzine

Sybil with Sophia Loren

C.C. You have worked with so many great directors and actors, are there any talented folks you’ve yet to work with that you’d jump at the chance too? Whose films are intriguing to you?

SD – To mention a couple, immediately Leonardo DiCaprio (favorites-AVIATOR, TITANIC, BLOOD DIAMOND) and Russell Crowe (favorites-  GLADIATOR, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, CINDERELLA MAN,)  come to mind.  They are extremely passionate performers, very sexy and personify the ultimate strong male figures emotionally as well as psychically.  I love cars, clothing and movies with strong male/female “Bogie & Bergman” characters of the 40’s.  Director Martin Scorsese I’ve wanted to work with as long as I can remember.   I love the ultimate passion he injects in his movies my favorites starting with TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS, RAGING BULL, GANGS OF NEW YORK, Michael Jackson’s bad Video, THE AVIATOR and pretty much everything in-between.

C.C. You took a hiatus from acting for quite sometime. What sparked your interest to come back?

SD – MY FANS!  It was my first time at the major Memorabilia Show in New Jersey, Chiller Theatre, October 2005. My fans were lined up with photos, posters, magazines, videos, you name it from my movies, some of which I had forgotten.  I signed those and photos I brought and was amazed how many of my fans were there to see me, get my autograph and I listened to how passionate they were about the one or other movie. They asked me when I was going to do another Woman in Prison or Werewolf movie, etc. It was then I realized my fans want to see me again on the big screen.  Always thankful to my fans for my success, I realized how loyal they were to me all the years I was absent and I owed them to go back to doing movies.  Not easy to ease back into the biz after so long, I took it very serious and did what I could to make a come-back.  I did it with Tarantino’s WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS and Rob Zombies re-make of HALLOWEEN which made my fans really happy and me too.  It was my turning point.  I also thank my most loyal fan and friend  to date Jim Blogg who during my years of absence kept his Sybil Danning Fan club:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheLegendofSybilDanning/ alive and hoping for my return.  Jim started, created and is Web Master of my Website www.sybildanning.net.  Thank you so much Jim for your dedication and loyalty. Loyalty is of major importance to me and Jim stood with me.

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineC.C. I’ve been fantasizing about a Chad Cherry perfume. I think you can probably help me out with this. What should I do?

SD – Don’t fantasize, do it!  Get your favorite scent, put it in a bottle, and call it “Gets You Off” named after your “Whatever Gets You Off” hot number.  The girls will LOVE it and the guys will want it.

C.C. Brilliant! Ok, most people probably don’t like this question, but bein’ who I am and doin’ what I do… I will always ask. What are you listening to music-wise right now?

SD –Right now.  I just gave it away above – your dirty rock “Whatever Gets You Off!”  I love it!  Great lyrics, rock and Video!  And by the way I also love your beautiful ballad, “Apologize.”  Like Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, I love your tough and tender sides!  CC, you’re cool, you’re hot!

C.C. I’m going to accept those fantastic, lovely words. (As C.C. blushes like a li’l schoolboy) Can ya tell the kiddies about some of your highly stylized writings and the producing you do for films?

SD – I love writing; though painful when staring at an empty sheet, it’s very satisfying once everything synchronizes and comes together.  I took a 4 day Seminar with Screen writing Guru Robert McKee.  Barry Manilow was in my class.  I’ve written and re-written a few screenplays, nothing I’ve yet produced.  I seriously started when I was flat on my back in and out of the hospital ending with surgery.  I ruptured 2 discs and tore all tissue while flipping a girl over my back in my gym.  Because time is precious, once on my feet again I focused on acting and producing.  Though difficult and frustrating especially in this economic period I find producing very creative because it gives you the opportunity to create elements necessary for a successful movie. All I’m currently writing is my Autobiography for which I have a deadline. I’m very fortunate to have Marshall Terrill bestselling Novelist Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel, Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business and many others, as my Editor in Chief.  I’m also very happy to say, two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner will produce and star in a McQueen biopic based on two books by Marshall Terrill: Portrait of an American Rebel and his most recent, The Life and Legacy of a Hollywood Icon.

Sybil Danning - interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip Service webzineC.C. Can’t wait. Let us know what’s up and coming in Sybil’s world? What can the fans expect next?

SD – My last movie, VIRUS X released by LionsGate is out and can be found at Blockbuster, Amazon, Netflix and Walmart.  Soon it will also be available on my website www.sybildanning.net with other DVDs, Posters, Photos and other Memorabilia.  I will be at the exciting NEW COMIKAZE (Comic, Anime, Gaming, Sci-Fi, and Horror) Expo in Los Angeles November 5 & 6, 2011. Get ready all my HOWLING II fans and meet me at High-Noon, Nov 5 because I will be auctioning for the first time ever my most popular leather and brass complete costume by MAD MAX designer Peter Mitchell.  I’m producing a “Vampire” movie written by Scott Sanford and will be in it as well.  More on that once I have the financing completed.  I’m also producing a movie/TV series on “RUGER” a character I own.  I wrote the script and have a bible ready for the follow-up TV series. What’s most exciting is that I and my producing partner Les Thomas, a Video Game Analyst, Specialist and Journalist have RUGER in development as a First Person Shooter Cloud Game.  I will reveal more to you as we go along.  Right now I’m holding her design, etc close to my bullet proof vest.  I will give you links to the whirlwind PR we’ve gotten on RUGER at the recent largest Los Angeles Gaming E3Expo in the world.  This has already spread throughout Asia and Europe with whom Les is working.  One thing I can tell you, for sure there will be MAJOR MADAME MAHEM!
All my fans please go to www.sybildanningsruger.com to stay informed on RUGER…or else!

C.C. Yes! Very amazing. So you and I have been toying around with the idea about a The Last Vegas video for a lil’ while now. I see something very grand in the near future. Do you think the world will be ready for this? (I know they’ll be.)

SD –CC, love your crystal balls!  The Italians told me my name in Italian comes from Sibila Gumana, a mystic Fortune Teller, and yes, I too see something very hot and heavy in the very near future. Hell yes, the world is ready because the world is OUR FANS and they are ripe and ready for US!
Thank you and all my Love and Bullets to you CC and all my loyal fans, Sybil.

The Devil Inside: Penelope Spheeris

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011 by Chad Cherry

THE WOMAN IS A ROCK-N-ROLL OUTLAW

Penelope Spheeris interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip service webzineThis month I bring you greatness! (What’s new?) I will describe this greatness in two words.

PENELOPE SPHEERIS.

Referred to as a rock-n-roll anthopologist, she is a heroine to art.

Penelope Spheeris has created some of the most entertaining and informative documentaries on underground music culture as well as character driven movies based on raw emotion, reality, and captivating story lines that you couldn’t break away from unless a truck crashed though your house and destroyed your t.v… I’m not kidding.

Her feature debut was the 1979 documentary on the L.A. punk scene, “The Decline Of Western Civilization.” It received stunning and unanimous critical praise while the LAPD shut down Hollywood Boulevard and Chief of Police, Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not to be shown again in L.A. Opps. From there Penelope took off with her brilliance and whipped up some of the wickedest docs, indies, and major studio features you will ever lay your eyes and ears on. Not to mention that she’s made some of the funniest flicks you have in your collection. Such as:

Studio Features: Wayne’s World, Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, Black Sheep, and Senseless

Documentaries: The Decline Of Western Civilization (1 thru 3), Ry Cooder, The Impressions, Banned in the U.S.A: 2 Live Crew, Heavy Metal Thunder and Mud, Lifer’s Group, No Use Walkin’ When You Can Stroll, and We Sold Our Souls For Rock-n-Roll. (If you love rock-n-roll and haven’t watched any of these yet.. Run! They are a must see! Go!)

Indies: Suburbia (I use to watch this movie every day for years.), Boys Next Door, Hollywood Vice Squad, Dudes, The Kid and I

Penelope Spheeris interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip service webzineI’m not even including all the short films and syndicated television she’s done. Among the movie mayhem, check out the music vid creds she has slayed for the likes of: Megadeth, Foghat, Gary Wright, Keel, George Benson, David Essex, America, Will Sexton, Queen, Curtis Mayfield, Night Ranger, Funkadelics, Staple Singers, Fleetwood Mac and Alice Cooper!!!!!!!!!

She’s produced shorts for Saturday Night Live and wrote for the t.v. series Roseanne (AWESOME!) from 88-97.

This still does not even graze the surface of this woman’s work.

With her new movie “Balls To The Wall” ready to be unleashed, I thought it was time to touch base with her on a few things we both have a passion for. Movies and music. Getting the opportunity to talk with Penelope truly made my day.

C.C. You worked as a film editor and a cinematographer before forming “Rock ‘n Reel” back in the day. Are you responsible for the first L.A. production company to specialize in what became know as the “music video”?

When I graduated from UCLA I worked as an assistant film editor on small educational and industrial films.  My boss was so mean – I remember the day he made me work even thought I had the flu.  I had an armful of film and as we were going up in an elevator,  I barfed all over it and he was so pissed.  Soon after I got a call from my friend who worked at CBS records, Peter Philbin.  He asked if I wanted to shoot a music video.  He said the record companies had just figured out that if they filmed a band’s song, they could just send the film all over the world instead of the band.  No airfares, no TV’s off the balcony, heh, what an idea.  I started what I believed to be the first music video company here in L.A.  It was called Rock ‘n Reel.  I flew all over the world and learned so much while shooting all those bands.  My technical skills became totally sharpened, my view of the world totally changed, and I realized I wanted to spend my life putting music and film together.  So far, so good.

Penelope Spheeris interview by Chad Cherry in the Lip service webzineC.C. Documenting such strong features as “The Decline” films you showed the reality of a culture and an underbelly of intense lifestyles. Seeing the exposed bone in such a way, did this make you stray away from the offer to direct the “mockumentary” This Is Spinal Tap?

I was in talks with Chris Guest, Harry Shearer and a guy named David Jablin about me directing Spinal Tap.  I loved the music and musicians so much that I could not wrap my head around making fun of them at that time.  When they turned to Rob Reiner, I thought ‘That’s an odd choice.  What the hell does he know about music?”  But that is exactly what they needed to make it work – an outside perspective.  Do I regret not doing it?  Not in the least.  Rob and the boys obviously did a brilliant job.  They were meant to do it, not me.

C.C. My opinion on most of the new music nowadays is it’s no where near as interesting enough to have a documentary made about it, unless it’s the under ground stuff. I don’t see the characters or hear the songs anymore that use to influence me to do what I do now. How are your feelings on the current state of rock-n-roll?

For the most part, R + R has become diluted and morphed into such a mish-mash of styles that it has no style, no character or hard-edged definition.  Rock n’ roll was always best when it broke the rules and challenged mainstream thinking.  Maybe all the rules have been broken, but in any case it sure ain’t what it used to be.  Glad I was around when it was in its glory.

C.C.  I admire how you have a hard as hell edge to you and also an unbelievably comical side as well. Let’s talk about your new comedy film ‘Balls To The Wall.’ I’m going to pee myself with laughter, aren’t I?

We screened it at the Newport Beach Film Festival lately and it was through the roof!  There were more laughs in that screening than any Wayne’s World screening,  Who knows, it was Saturday night, maybe they were all drunk – but I don’t think so.  It’s about a guy who wants to get married (to Jenna Dewan – who wouldn’t?) – they can’t afford the wedding – so his future father-in-law (Shooter McGavin) puts him to work as a male exotic dancer.  As with all  of my movies, it’s taking a while for it to be ‘accepted’.  Distributors are scared of it, but so were they with The Decline, Suburbia, Boys Next Door, We Sold Our Souls for Rock ‘n Roll, etc.  Those have stood the test of time and so will Balls to the Wall.  It’s always difficult getting through the wall of mediocrity, but thaz cool.  I can wait.

C.C.  Penelope, you write, act, direct, edit, produce and probably have discovered time travel. With of all your talents and knowledge of rock-n-roll, why haven’t you ever wrote any music? Or have you and I’m out of the loop? Where’s “The Penelope Spheeris Band?” I want the vinyl record.

You’re too kind!  In the late Sixties, record producer extraordinaire Jack Nietsche sat me and my brother Jimmie down at a piano and said “Sing Ruby Tuesday”.  We did, but I realized how incredibly shy I am to perform in front of people.  My brother Jimmie, who was brilliant, went on to do a bunch of albums on Sony and Epic Records.  I think I stayed off camera on the docs because of my shyness.  My voice is there though!

C.C.  I have to ask. Top 5 bands you are listening to right now?

Love Skinny Puppy.  The Resistance (local L.A.)  Paquita la del Barrio (awesome older Mexican singer – love love love her), Girlschool, Genitorturers.

C.C. As a huge fan of everything you’ve done and are doing, you are still an inspiration to me in so many ways through out my life and career. My last question (or proposal) for you is this: I will mow your lawn, take out the trash and wash all your dishes for a year if I can get you to direct a video for The Last Vegas. Deal? ;)

Did we use one of your songs in Balls to the Wall?

If you haven’t checked out anything by Penelope yet, you are missing out in life! I recommend you do so immediately. And check out her new movie “Balls to the Wall”. You’ll love it. Not only cuz it’s gonna be fuckin’ hilarious but The Last Vegas have a song in it as well. I’m into that. So get cool and dig into Penelope’s work ya creeps!!!!

The Devil Inside: Patrick Lee

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 by Chad Cherry

“The city was drifted with human bones…”

author Patrick LeeThis is the month I force you Lip Service junkies to dig into something ya might not have done for a while. You creeps are gonna read a book … or two. But not just any books! We are gonna get into pure adventure and escapism. THRILLER. The imagination takes over and dives you into our world like you’ve never seen it. Or could believe. This month we read graphic sci/fi-thriller novels that will “put lead in yer pencil.”

I’m privileged and honored to get the chance to interview not only a brilliant writer but a true friend I had the chance to grow up with on the backwoods plains of “B.F.E.” At a very young age I noticed my friend had an intense power to wield the pen to manipulate life in every way shape and form… Long story short.

My broham PATRICK LEE is talented as hell.

The reviews about his books will speak for themselves.

“Audacious and terrifying, uncannily believable.” -Lee Child

“Patrick Lee’s ‘Ghost Country’ is in a word: Brilliant. Less novel, than an adventure, it left me breathless and awed. It’s explosive, innovative, and ultimately mind blowing. Pure exhilaration from the first page to the last.” -James Rollins, ‘New York Times’ bestselling author of the ‘Doomsday Key.”

“Settle back and savor this one. Patrick Lee has an intense brand of storytelling. He’s a most welcome addition to the genre. The real deal. I look forward to reading more from him.” -Steve Berry, “New York Times” bestselling author

“Holy shit I’m interviewing Pat Lee next month…” I should read his books.” -Chad Cherry,  author of “Gimme Back My Leather Pants Bitch.”  *bogus review

“Wow! Double wow! Starkly original, ‘Ghost Country’ will make Asimov and Heinlein cheers with the angels. The techo-thriller meets sci-fi, and the result is mind-blowing.” -Stephen Coonts

Ladies and germs… I give you the ‘New York Times’ bestselling author of ‘The Breach’ and ‘Ghost Country.’ PATRICK LEE.

C.C. Pat it’s great to hear from you and it’s great to see your books on the shelves everywhere I go. Your character ‘Travis Chase’ (the hero in your series) is a no bullshit, “hard as they come” real deal fucking bad ass. Why did you mold his likeness after yours truly Chad Cherry? I haven’t dealt with “top secret anomalies” “other worldly power” or have been “mankind’s only hope” for a very long time.

Ghost Country by Patrick LeeP.L. When I was seven, my grandfather’s dying words were, “Chad Cherry is going to be a badass rockstar–if you ever get off your ass and write a book, model the main character after him.”  Then the crocodile dragged him under and that was the end of it.  I’m never going back to Australian Disney World.

C.C. Soooooooooooo Pat. I shit myself after I read both of your books. That’s how good your writing is. Does this happen to everyone that reads your stuff? Can you explain this to me?

P.L. I was actually going for a laxative effect with these books, but they were supposed to “work gently overnight,” like the products in all those TV spots showing people sleeping peacefully, smiling.  Instead, something has gone horribly wrong, and now only one man can stop the nightmare before it’s too–oh, sorry about that.  I get caught up in making things sound dramatic.

C.C. Let’s talk about the character Paige Campbell. So tough, so intelligent, so ruthless at times, so hot. Where do I go to find her? Please tell me she is real.

P.L. She exists deep in the stuck-in-adolescence part of my mind (95% of the brain, by volume) which causes me, when I’m playing Tomb Raider, to turn carefully in doorways so that the camera zooms in on just Lara Croft’s boobs and the MP5 submachinegun she’s holding.

C.C. When I read your books I genuinely see everything in my mind as a film that needs to be made. The story and your characters are so identifiable and perfect for the silver screen. We grew up on a shit ton of great movies and books.. criticizing (but still enjoying) most. Who do you see playing the part of Travis Chase (besides me)?

P.L. Hmmm, let’s see.  If the studio can’t work things out with you, I’d probably want them to use some CGI mixture of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio.  Or if that’s expensive for some reason, Pitt by himself would be pretty awesome.

C.C. How far off am I for thinking Kate Beckinsale could play the part of Paige Campbell?

P.L. I would walk from here to Los Angeles on my ass cheeks to beg her to play the role.  (Only to be devastated to learn she lives in England.)  On the other hand, I could probably try asking the producers to call her agent and pitch it; a crazy approach like that might be better.

C.C. Are you still screen writing? And can you let the kids know about your past work on this subject?

The Breach by Patrick LeeP.L. I actually stopped writing scripts a few years ago, to focus on books.  It’s definitely fun working on scripts, but I think it finally just hit me that I’m more suited to novels.  As far as the scripts, though, I sold two of them in my early twenties, and… I think they almost got made.  (This may be what every ex-screenwriter thinks.)

C.C. Blondes or Brunettes now?

P.L. There’s a definite preponderance of brunettes in my dating past.  The fact that they’re in my past instead of my present is probably a result of my using words like preponderance.  (It could also be the zooming in on Lara Croft’s boobs.)

C.C. Your writings include loads and loads of brutal, graphic violence. (Thank you!) Do you think the young adults that read your books will want to go out and beat people’s head open with steal pipes? (I did get inspired)

P.L. Only a tiny percentage of my readers have actually been caught doing this.  The rest are smart enough to wipe the prints and ditch the weapon.

C.C. Your brother Chris is the reason I got into Van Halen. Does he still have the Eddie guitar?

P.L. Oh, I totally remember that thing.  I think he used masking and electrical tape to match the look.  It might be in a closet somewhere, but I haven’t seen it since circa 1991.

C.C. I’m so over asking you questions. You live in Chicago now, I’m in Chicago right now too…. Let’s go get some strange. Ya?

P.L. Shit ya!!

C.C. Well Pat, I’m proud of you and can’t wait for another book. I’m glad I got shit goin’ on in my life so I don’t have to be jealous of you becoming the bad ass that ya are. And thank you for the nightmares.

P.L. Dude, I’m proud of you too!  We’re living proof that you shouldn’t pay attention in school; just sit in the back of the class and make fun of people, including the teacher, and you’ll end up with your dream career.  (That statement is not legally binding, kids.  Your results may vary.)

So don’t be dumb and pick up Patrick Lee’s books immediately. All b.s. set aside (just for a second anyway) These novels are phenomenal front to back.

The Devil Inside: The Misfits

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 by Chad Cherry

-WALK AMONG US-

There’s only a handful of musical acts we can say, “Oh, that band? One of my faves.” You can listen to their tunes for years on end and not get sick of ‘em. You still love everything about the songs, the imagery, and the attitude. The feelings and memories take you to a place you love and will probably be there for ya when you create new wonders as well. No matter how much you change and grow in life, this music has remained with you, un-calloused.

Quick story……

- Discovery for a young Chad Cherry in the record store…
(Dream like flash back waves and sound fx placed here…)

“What’s this creepy lookin’ shit near the MC-5 records? Whatever it is it probably sucks … Hey, wait just a minute here … It looks like some kinda … Some kinda horror movies in the form of 7′ vinyl records!!! Hold on… Is this for real?!?!

And without question I knew I needed them.

“I’m stealing these fuckers.”  (My credit was good.)

- A young Chad Cherry back at his room playing his new find on the turn table … (The record player wasn’t stolen.. Don’t judge me.)

“B-horror and sci-fi inspired songs! Painted skeletal patterns on performance clothing! Devilocks!!! Holy shit! I’m home! They’re singing about Jackie O doin’ what?!?! This is like ‘Night of the Living Dead’ meets ‘The Ramones’ in a dirty basement filled with hooks … but not stabbing hooks … melody hooks!!! Hairs at end! THE MISFITS!”

“Favs”

‘The Misfits’ it was … and ‘The Misfits’ it is …

A name taken from Marilyn Monroe’s last film, The Misfits in each incarnation have made use of horror and science fiction inspired themes and imagery with make-up, clothing, artwork, and lyrics that came from B-movie and t.v. serials. They are recognized as the progenitors of the horror-punk sub-genre and have drawn from punk-rock, heavy metal, and 50′s era r-n-r, rockabilly (the song ‘Angel Fuck’… Soooo greaser tough.) to inform their killer style. “The archetypal horror-punk band of the late 70′s early 80′s.” They are considered icons in punk rock and culture.

I always thought of them as a “punk-rock” band but there was something different about ‘em. They were not your average by any means. Associated with the hardcore punk movement of the early 80′s for sure, but check it. Steve Blush, author of American Hardcore, notes “Though crucial to the rise of H.C., they were in fact in a league of their own … The Misfits delivered a hyper-yet melodic assault based in 50′s/60′s style of rock, taking the Buddy Holly/Gene Vincent foundation and making it nuclear.” Indeed.

I think, for many generations to come, I’ll still see that skeletal figure mascot inspired by the 1946 film serial “The Crimson Ghost” on t-shirts. (Even if the kids don’t listen to the music. Or we all die from this “Zombie Apocalypse” I’ve been hearing about on all the news channels.) I think I’m cool with this. And I’m sure Glenn is too.

My favorite quote while inspecting old Misfit’s videos on youtube. Coming from one day ago. “I miss the old punk-rock. And I’m 13.”

The Danzig era (or the incarnation now) of The Misfits will be timeless music/horror/sci-fi entertainment. This band has been an obvious influence on me and a fuck-load of other rock heads (including Metallica and G-n-R) who still look up to Alice Cooper as … well, Alice Cooper. No matter how much music changes and how many fads come and go, I think the Misfits will never not be cool.

You should already know this fashion fiends. But I wrote about it just in case you didn’t. “Lets go where eagles dare.”

Now take off my Lip Service clothes and give me a bath … Not you … Your girlfriend.

-Chad Cherry at his ‘Fortress of Blood’:

I’ve been listening to a few final mixes on several new tunes from The Last Vegas at casa de Cherry and I’m very happy with what I’ve been diggin’. (I will refuse to rush anything on these babies.) Johnny K, our producer, is just as nuts as we are … this is good. I will listen to the new songs and then want to listen to them over again. This is also good. I’m enjoying rockin’ ‘em out at my place instead of the studio which, to me, is another good sign. My black cat, Knuckles, goes bananas crazy wild when I play some of these mixes (he’s a v.i.p., gets all the new TLV goods first.). I’m not sure what this means but it’s funny as hell and I like watching him get rowdy to the shit. Animal rock. (The only other time cat acts up like this is when I play ‘Mississippi Queen’ by ‘Mountain’…?)

For those of you that are antic……………………………….ipating the new Last Vegas… I like you for it. It will be out of this world for sure, astro baby!
