When it comes to doom, all roads lead to Birmingham. It’s been several decades since those first Sabbathian rumblings first erupted, but Brum has done a good job of keeping up its reputation as the spiritual home of heavy metal. One of the most exciting new(ish) cadres of doomed souls to emerge from the area, Alunah, melds classic UK doom with psychedelic shades and stoner fuzz, tossing in a heavy dose of acid rock and dirty blues for color. Vocalist Soph Day is a formidable talent, both onstage and on record, and an all-around lovely person besides. Her voice drives the band, in turns sweet and sultry, and always powerful. The band are currently working on some new tunes, and are understandably still high off the fumes of their recent and very successful Desertfest appearance alongside heavyweights like Corrosion of Conformity and Orange Goblin. I spoke to Soph about their upcoming LP, Janis Joplin, and the Devil’s music.

Kim Kelly: It seems like 2012 has already been a busy year for you! Can you tell me a bit about what’s going on with Alunah? What are y’all working on right now?

Soph Day; Yeah, I can’t believe it’s only May, seems like a lot further into the year! We’ve been working on our second album “White Hoarhound” which is coming out around Summer time on PsycheDOOMelic. We’ve had Greg Chandler record us again, he’s the main man in Esoteric and has worked with acts such as Serpentcult and Moss previously, so in good company! This time, Tony Reed from Stone Axe is mixing and mastering. He has just worked on the new St. Vitus so, again, good company! The album should be ready mid-june and then all the press will be handled! As well as that, we’ve been gigging, most notably we played DesertFest back in April, and have some cool shows coming up including a date with Karma to Burn.

KK: For those who don’t know you yet, could you give me some background on your musical adventures, and tell me what the relationship is between you and Alunah?

SD: I’ve always been involved in music in some form or another, I played violin, clarinet and organ as a child/teen and then moved onto the harder stuff hahaha! I helped start Alunah along with Dave and Jake back in 2006 and apart from Gaz who joined a few years back when our previous bassist left, that line-up is the same. Originally I solely provided vocals but the last four years or so has seen me on guitar also.

KK: What is your day job? How did you get involved in that field, and what do your colleagues think about your bands & involvement in metal?

SD: I’m an Internet Marketing Consultant for a small firm based out in the Leicestershire countryside. My degree is actually in Graphic Design and for years that is the field I worked in, then a combination of that and marketing. As online marketing and search engine optimisation has become more prevalent, I developed an interest and that’s what I do now. It comes in mighty handy for the band! I don’t think my colleagues are bothered either way, they ask questions about the band and some of them are into rock / metal themselves, but I have never received any negative feedback from anywhere I’ve worked. My last boss (I had a marketing role in a Solicitor’s firm) was a huge Black Sabbath fan, massive! In fact, when I first spoke to him to arrange the interview, we were on tour and had to decline the interview. When asked why I couldn’t make it I “came clean” and told him I was touring – he thought it was the best thing ever and we struck up a conversation about Sabbath – needless to say I got the job!

KK: What’s your favorite book?

SD: I must admit I don’t read as many books as I would like to, and the last books I read were the complete Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) collection hahaha. A book which frightened the living daylights out of me, and probably had some part to pay in me being vegetarian, was Iain Banks’ “Wasp Factory”. It just seemed so horrific to me and really struck a chord, I couldn’t stop thinking about it months after I’d finished reading it and I’ve probably read it 50 times! I really love Irwin Welsh’s writing too, “Trainspotting” got me interested and I then sought out his other novels and plays.

KK: What’s in your purse right now?

SD: Haha great question! I’m guessing you mean handbag (forgive me, I’m English!). If so, I have a purse/wallet, Blackberry phone, tin of Vaseline, a letter reminding me to get my ass down to the opticians for my contact lense check haha, some Ibruprofen tablets, a spoon (??),
another tin of Vaseline, some plectrums, hairbrush, White Hoarhound rough mix CD, a bottle of water, and a Filofax. Some right shit in
there!!

KK: How did you get into metal in the first place, and what inspired you to pick up a microphone?

SD: Originally, when I was 13/14, I was well into my indie rock and Britpop, and from that I moved onto Grunge which I still love today. I kinda got into metal once I met my Husband and band member, Dave, when I was 15 – he was big into Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Anthrax, Iron Maiden etc and, apart from Maiden (who I can’t stand), I started listening to them and found more bands I loved such as Testament – one of my personal favourites! We both kinda got into the kind of music we play through Kyuss and Cathedral, and then had fun finding all of the other bands that make up those genres! Our third and fifth gigs, respectively, were supporting the legendary bands Trouble and Paradise Lost, which were really special shows for us. I definitely listen to less metal now and more of those offshoot genres – stoner, doom, sludge, psych etc. As for who inspired me to pick up a microphone, I have three names… Tairrie B Murphy, Janis Joplin and Lori S!! Big Brother and the Holding Company and Acid King are two of my favourite bands of all time, totally different in style musically but both with kick ass ladies on vocals! Same goes for Tairrie B, who I have followed since her Manhole days. I met her this year and she was very kind about Alunah. We had the pleasure of supporting Acid King last year and to see Lori nodding her head down the front was a dream come true. Sadly I’ll never meet Janis, but I have seen Big Brother and the Holding Company play with a very brave lady on vocals; they’re big shoes to fill and she did Janis’ memory proud.

KK: Female-fronted doom bands have been all over the place lately, from the psychedelic rock of Blood Ceremony to the harsher tones of Monarch, and all points in between. It’s not uncommon to see a woman slinging bass in a stoner rock band, or pounding the drums for a sludge outfit. Do you think the world of doom is more welcoming for female musicians, when contrasted to the other extreme realms (black, death, thrash, grind, etc)?

SD: Initially people hated us, and a lot more than likely still do. Even though there are many women in doom, I don’t think there are many with the same singing style as myself. That’s not me being egotistical, either, as I don’t consider my vocals to be technically sound or particularly strong, but I do think we’re doing something different, and it’s taken a while for people to get it. I’m not sure how accepted women are in the other genres you mention, as I’ve never really gotten into those kind of bands, so am pretty ignorant as far as that is concerned. I can only talk from experience with the doom/stoner genre and let’s just say, the majority of people don’t care as long as the band are decent, we will always get tagged “female fronted” but that comes with the territory. There are only a few neanderthals who don’t think a women should be fronting a band, let alone singing melodic songs and playing guitar. I know you get it too, shock horror a woman knowing her shit about music! A woman in a band should be a regular occurrence rather than a novelty, which it has the danger of becoming.

KK: The Devil’s always had the best tunes, and doom has more in common with the dirty Delta roots of blues and rock’n'roll than most of Black Sabbath’s bastard children. Your vocals and the guitar licks scattered throughout Alunah’s tunes bear a heavy mark of those slinky, smoky grooves; how big of an influence would you say that the blues has had on your sound, and how did you get into that kind of music?

SD: The blues has had a massive influence on my vocals and Dave’s riffs! As I mentioned earlier, Janis Joplin is my favourite vocalist. My love of the blues comes from her and also the likes of Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors. Through them, I was exposed to Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin Wolf, Bessie Smith, and Billy Holiday. Dave’s a huge blues fan, which led us to the USA and honeymoon in Memphis and New Orleans. In fact, we first met you at the Black Tusk/Monstro show in Memphis at the Hi-tone Cafe. Whilst we were out there we saw some awesome blues bands, but visiting Sun Studios, Graceland, Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, Gibson guitar factory, and Stax Museum were equally amazing! With the blues, the music wouldn’t exist without the story, that’s what I love about all those early artists – they had a story to tell and they told it so damn well!

KK: Who are some of your favorite vocalists (male, female, whatever!)?

SD: Janis Joplin is my favourite vocalist of all time – raw and powerful, but beautiful and soft at the same time! Keeping with the women, I also love Joni Mitchell, Lori S, Tairrie B Murphy, Nancy and Anne Wilson, Beth Gibbons, and Grace Slick. Not forgetting the men, I’d say I’m most inspired by John Garcia and the way he forms melodies, but I also love Layne Staley, Robert Plant, Bob Marley, and Jim Morrison. So, yeah, a bit of a mixture right there for you!

KK: How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

SD: Hahaha depends where I’m going, I generally cannot function without a shower – I’m a bitch all day without one! Probably about an hour but most of that is spent drying my hair!

KK: What’s your favorite non-metal record? Your favorite metal album?

SD: Non-metal its a toss up between “Dummy” by Portishead or “Trouble” by Ray Lamontagne but my favourite albums change constantly! As for my favourite metal album, I’m not really a fan of straight up metal but, if you’re talking favourite heavy album, I’d say it’s between Goatsnake’s “Flower of Disease” or Spiritual Beggars’ “On Fire”.

KK: The last words are yours!

SD: Cheers Kim, it’s a pleasure to be interviewed by your good self! We’ll be touring White Hoarhound end of the Summer / early Autumn and have our album launch in Birmingham in August. We also have some dates planned throughout the early summer also. Keep visiting our website www.alunah.co.uk for more information, and be sure to come and find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/alunah.doom.

Alice Cooper happens to be one of my favourite artists of all time. Growing up, my dad was a huge fan, and I have fond memories of dancing around the living room to “Welcome to My Nightmare”. He’s one of the most important figures in rock music, and has shaped much of the imagery and attitude of the heavy metal music we love so much.

I’ve seen him perform twice, once at a two-day festival Rock2Wgtn, where he stole the show from the other performers with a realistic hanging. The last time was in my city, Auckland, when he was touring his Welcome 2 My Nightmare album, and I was right up the front, only a few feet from one of my idols.

Since we’re all going a little Alice-mad over at LippyHQ, and because you’ve only got a few days left to enter the competition to WIN FREE Alice Cooper tickets, I thought it would be fun to entertain you all with a few Alice Cooper quotes and trivia.

“From the moment I leave my house or my hotel room, the public owns me. The public made Alice Cooper and I can’t imagine ever turning my back on my fans.”

His album Love It To Death was recalled so designers could airbrush out Alice’s thumb from the cover, since the label received complaints that it resembled a penis.

Although he was born Vincent Damon Furnier, in 1974 he legally changed his name to Alice Cooper.

Alice’s first record deal came about after he discovered where Frank Zappa lived. Cooper took his band over to Zappa’s house at 7 in the morning, set up in Zappa’s yard and started playing. When Zappa came out and demanded to know what was going on, Alice said, “The band will continue playing until you do one of two things: give us a record deal or call the police.” Luckily for Alice, Zappa chose the former.

“He (Marilyn Manson) has a woman’s name and wears makeup. How original.”

Alice Cooper is an obsessive golfer, playing 6 days a week if he can. He’s played in a number of Pro-Am competitions and hosts his own annual celebrity golf tournament, with the proceeds going to his charity, the Solid Rock Foundation.

“I appreciate an audience that reacts to the music, even if they jump on stage and try to beat us up, I think that’s a fantastic reaction. I think that they’re really hearing something then.”

Starting in 2004 Alice Cooper hosted a radio show called “Nights with Alice Cooper” that was broadcast across in over 100 stations across the US and Canada.

The magician James Randi designed many of Alice Cooper’s stage props, including the famous guillotine, and the magician often appeared on stage in early performances as the executioner.

Alice Cooper co-founded the notorious drinking club, The Hollywood Vampires.

In 1994 Alice Cooper released an album called The Last Temptation, a concept album based on a three-part comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and released concurrently with the album.

At the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival show in 1969, a fan threw a live chicken on stage. Alice, who came from Detroit and wasn’t familiar with farm animals, generally didn’t realise that chickens can’t fly. He threw the bird in the air, assuming it would fly off to safety. Instead, it fell straight down into the mosh pit, where the fans tore it to pieces and threw the bits back on stage. Newspaper headlines later claimed Alice had bitten the head off the chicken and drank its blood. Frank Zappa advised Cooper not to correct them.

The key litmus test
do you think that Christian Death
was better with Rozz?

Dress to Distress

No rave in this grave, baby. This monster mash is all about the bats, bones, and honoring goth’s punk roots with DIY vests, bum flaps, and customized footwear(Meagan’s closet contains quite the amazing pair of spiderweb platforms). Layers upon layers of torn stocking, adornments sourced from carcasses of deceased beasts (gravers?), and a propensity for hating “all the techno bullshit DJs play at goth clubs these days” add further appeal to the deathrocker’s slightly drunk and disorderly charm. Oh, and they’ve been known to accessorize with the mummified remnants of those they’ve killed in bar fights. 100% true story. Anyone currently in the possession of a glowstick or claiming that Christian Death was in fact better with Valor is strongly advised to keep their distance.

Nothing goes with a graveyard tan quite like the Lippy’s Dem Bones #56-298 Totally Rad Sun(Not) dress.

Favorite band tee seems to exist exclusively in size Men’s XL? No problem. Scissors, thread, a thrifted vest and a rainy weekend holed up indoors (or 15 minutes spent surfing Etsy) open up a whole new world of one of a kind band merch (Yes, Miss Meagan Kyla whipped this number up herself).

Much to our collective chagrin, spring weather has proven itself to be downright schizo in 2012 (85° today, snow flurries tomorrow). Staying ahead of those surprise bone chillin’ cold fronts means slipping on a lightweight black lace cardi under your vest to keep warm without adding outfit-sabotaging excess bulk.

Dancing with the dead is known to be a risky business, so nip in that waist with a buckled black striped corset, before your zombified heart’s desire (or the maggots he’s covered in) takes a nip of your intestines.

To avoid jostling the dead from their eternal slumber with your Frankenstein footwear- opt for a pair of brothel creepers while creepin’ about the boneyard. Or if you’re trying to bail on a passed out hooker without paying for services rendered.

Let it be known that those shredded, distressed, completely and utterly obliterated stockings are as iconic to deathrock fashion almost as much as the deathhawk itself.

First rule of grave robbing: Any jewels/spare ribs no one’s currently using procured in the act of raiding tombs are considered to be finder’s keepers.

High & Mighty Hawk

Miss Meagan Kyla kindly imparts her “grave wisdom” concerning the ins and outs of taking hair to skyscraper heights.

Tools of the trade:

Comb or teasing brush (I like the brush)

Strong hair spray, if it doesn’t read “mega ultra hurricane proof”, then pass. I recommend Bedhead Hard Head.

Step one: Crimp or straighten hair with your choice of appliances

Step two: Section off hair and commence with the back combing. Start from root to tip, don’t be shy, tease, tease, TEASE! (tip: small sections equals more tease, more tease equals more volume)

Step three: Spray with hair spray at roots per section, more teasing, hair spray, repeat. The more organized teased chaos on your head the better.

Step five: Adorn your ‘hawk with various bits and bobbles. *Added deathrock bonus points for animal bones or spider webs.

Step six: Now try fitting your massive deathhawk do’ into the car for the ride to the club. Good luck and don’t fuck it up!

With the summer upon us, convention season has begun! As Steampunk’s popularity has been rapidly growing in recent times, so have the amount of conventions and, with those, new people going to conventions. The issue of not knowing what to do in preparation for a convention is perfectly normal and, even with years of experience, sometimes people forget the small stuff. That is why a well-thought-out checklist is probably the most important to-do on your Con trip list.

Hygiene:

New friends will appreciate your impeccablly good hygeine

One unbathed savage can funk up an entire room and cause the people who dwell within to hurl all over the place. To prevent a scene similar to the paper thin wafer in The Meaning of Life, bathe or shower every day, or at least every other day. Pack deodorant and USE IT! People do sweat during a convention, especially if they are in a heavier or more elaborate outfit. The room will swelter if not air conditioned well enough, and that is grounds for con-funk to grow rapidly.

Another important subject is brushing your teeth. Conventions involve a lot of talking and, with how crowded conventions are, often people are crammed up quite close. It is terrible to be known as the person with the foulest breath that could slay any beast by opening their mouth and breathing death-stench upon them.

While smelling good is important, remember, it’s just as unpleasant if you overdo it. Do not bathe in perfume, or coat yourself in bodyspray to the point that people around you gag and cease breathing from the cloud of mystery chemicals.

A final tip on all things hygienic is to look presentable and to wear clean garments of all varieties. Wearing the same thing for an entire weekend can lead to ruined clothing and a truly foul stink that can not be cleansed with anything less than fire.

What to pack:

Clothing:

Stylish, yet practical.

It is always a good idea to have something comfortable to wear about when not at the convention or events, rather than being stuck in full suit the entire time. While traveling, unless the destination is nearby, riding or flying in full gear can be uncomfortable, plus puts your outfit at a higher risk for being damaged or having things spilled on it. Also, weather varies from place to place, California is a lot warmer than Michigan, and Michigan tends to get rain at random times with no notice, and plenty of snow in the winter. Be prepared, bring clothing that fits the weather of the destination, and look at the forecast in advance plus previous years’ weather.

Footwear:

Most of the time at a convention will be spent walking from place to place. Even if a panel is an hour long with seating, odds are the next one is across the hotel or convention center. Plus, if you want to do anything outside the immediate area and are without transport, walking long distances in uncomfortable footwear is miserable. You will also want to avoid wearing new shoes for the first time at the event; one day in new shoes can make feet feel miserable for an entire weekend. Break in anything you plan on wearing ahead of time and make sure it is comfortable. If an outfit has a special set of shoes or boots for it, have a second option on hand in case they start being a comfort problem.

Entertainment:

No matter how busy conventions are, there is always some downtime, so have entertainment. A tablet, ebook reader, real book, handheld gaming device, or decent smartphone can go a long way in fighting boredom. But, do not overdo it. Most of the time is going to be spent filled with wonder and amazement, so there is no need to bring a library along.

The Most Glorious of Things – Snacks:

Finally, to help preserve that most precious of resource, cold hard cash, bring your own snack food! Hotels and convention centers are outright assholes when it comes to food pricing. Ever pay $3 for a bottle of soda? $2 for that candy bar? It adds up fast. Bring some drinks and snacks with you, enough for when you are in the hotel room and a few things to stash in your bags or pockets while walking around as well. It will save money and aid the fight against hunger.

What NOT to Pack:

not exactly the most practical wardrobe choice

Do not pack anything that will not or can not be used, including extra props and accessories for outfits. I am notorious for bringing five sets of props and accessories for each outfit, and leaving all of them in the hotel room for an entire weekend. Too much extra gear only takes more work to pack, unpack, and transport to and from the hotel room. You don’t need that waste of time and energy! Leave the excess at home.

Also, keep in mind, some things are an absolute pain to carry around or use. If you think something you have made is going to be a problem, spend a day wearing or lugging it around the house. If by the end of the day you start swearing at it and consider breaking or burning things, do not bring it. Also, do not bother bring any DVD players, full size game consoles, or anything else that hooks into a television. Almost every hotel blocks off every port on their televisions or makes them otherwise inaccessible, rendering the loyal reader (meaning, you) unentertained, stuck paying the hotel’s pay-per-view or, worse, their rates on gaming.

Om Nom Nom – Food and Drink:

Stay well fed and hydrated the days before, after, and during a convention. Arriving at a convention with low energy from a lack of sustenance can ruin an entire weekend, and not maintaining a good diet the days following one can lead to con-flu, which is truly miserable. Eating and drinking during a convention should be priority one to keep energy up and to maintain good health. If the feeling of hunger sets in, find somewhere to eat. Keep hydrated with liquids that actually hydrate the body as well, such as water. Avoiding this important step often leads to feelings of sickness and being tired and all-around miserable during or after a convention.

Cash:

Bring cold hard cash, dollar bills, the green stuff, physical currency! Most merchants love being paid in cash, some will even be more willing to haggle on prices and negotiate if cash is in hand versus plastic being swiped. Having physical money with you also helps in another important step…

Budget:

Set aside some cash for artists and vendors

Have a budget planned out before going to any convention. Yes, it is possible and easy to go over if you are so inclined, but having a budget helps reduce impulse spending and often causes more thought to be made on each purchase. Not having a budget can lead to going home with a car full of things that you already forgot about buying, plus a bill in the mail for well more than was ever intended on being spent. Some expenses to keep in mind for the budget – Ticket price, hotel price, food, alcohol, merchandise, props, costumes, emergencies, and a fund for the completely unplanned purchases, such as seeing a band live and buying merchandise of albums after the show.

Quick Tips

This will not fit in your bag.

Be hygienic, stay clean, brush your teeth, smell and look presentable.

Do not pack too much or too little, bring what you need, but leave the extra stuff you will not have time to use at home.

Bring some form of entertainment for downtime in the hotel or if you are riding passenger or flying to your destination, but do not overdo it, since most conventions stay busy well into the night.

Be ready for the local weather, as it might not be what you are used to. Rain and snow do exist, as does extremely cold or extremely warm temperatures so, to be prepared, research ahead of time what weather is expected.

Be well-fed and hydrated at all times, which keeps your energy high, fights off con-flu, and will allow you to avoid being a cranky, antisocial bastard the entire convention.

Bring MONEY, cold hard cash!Stick to a budget, do not overspend and regret it when you get home.Look around the entire merchant area before purchasing things, since you may find some vendors are cheaper than others or a more sought-after object further in. Impulse buys hurt the budget!

The man is the evil genius behind the rock-horror genre and an absolute legend of stagecraft with a mastery of showmanship to equal P.T. Barnum himself. And … oh yeah … he writes some pretty good music, too.

So, as you all can imagine, when Chuck Garric, who’s touring with Alice, told us he wanted to take Lip Service along with him through the U.S., we were pretty much out of our minds with glee. More about that in a sec; first, some introductions may be in order.

About Chuck Garric

You hard-core rockers already know Chuck but, for those not in the know, here are some facts about Chuck. Chuck Garric celebrates 10 years with Alice Cooper this year. Chuck has contributed his bass playing and song writing talents to Four of the last Alice Cooper records “Eyes of Alice Cooper, “Dirty Diamonds”, “Along came a spider” and “Welcome 2 my nightmare”. Chuck also spent a few years touring and writing with Ronnie James DIO. Garric and DIO co-wrote the song Death by Love for Ronnie’s last DIO record “Master of the Moon”.

Chuck is currently in the studio with his new band 1967. And to give this project that extra kick, they brought Producer Tommy Henriksen on board. Look out for a new release in June.

Want to know more about Chuck and keep up with his latest news and touring? Check out his official website at ChuckGarric.com
