Halloween Horror Nights Review

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 by sagesin13

“What Fear Fears Most,” is the slogan for this year’s Universal Halloween Horror Nights. This annual event has people flocking from all over the world to attend for a night or, if you’re lucky and live local, with a pass that guarantees multiple days of horror.

I get a pass every year for a few reasons: 1) The lines often take up so much time you can’t get to everything! 2) A pass makes it much easier to go with friends when you want. 3) It’s so much fun you’ll be dying for more!

This year, like most others, there are 5 haunted mazes including:
-Nightmare on Elm Street with new Freddy Krueger
-Friday the 13th with new Jason Voorhees
-Saw featuring horrific new traps
-House of 1000 Corpses in 3D Zombie vision
-Vampyre: Castle of the Undead

multiple scare zones featuring:
- La Llorona
-Nightmarez
-Klownz
-Lunaticz
-Freakz
-Pigz

The Terror Tram: Chucky’s Revenge

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure

Most of the main rides are open, too.

You’ll be happy you got there on time when you’re waiting in line for both security and to get into the park. Finally, once through the turnstiles, you’re greeted by Freddy in the middle of the fountain and 2 smokin’ Freddy go-go girls. You know you’re inside, though, when you start hearing those chainsaws go off and the screams of scared tourists. All the rest of us can do is feel like we’re home and sit back to watch the show. Huge pyros go off above a clown ringleader and his army of evil chainsaw welding clowns. Of course, you can’t miss the giant jester towering over you.

Vampyre: Castle of the Undead is the first house you come across, being that it is inside Universal’s year-round House of Horrors. Not much is changed to the actual houses, just a bunch of vampyre girls and guys that actually make a nice addition. If you head toward the left of the park, you walk into “Lunaticz”, where the dangerous and demented asylum inmates have taken to the streets of London on a murderous rampage.

If you make it out of there, you come across your next task, making it through House of 1000 Corpses! Here you’re taken through Captain Spaulding’s and his Murder Ride, The Firefly house where you see Baby, Odius, and Tiny … all in Zombievision. The house is so realistic, you find yourself taking off your 3D glasses just to look at everything. Without even noticing, you exit into Paris where the “Freakz” have set up camp, anxious to get their hands on you food.

Next you come across Friday the 13th and the campgrounds of Camp Crystal Lake, where you see desperate campers in a bear trap and a sleeping bag. Various versions of Jason from the new movie come at you as you go through scenes such as the barn, The Vorhees house, Jason’s lair, the forest making you feel as if you were right there in it. As Jason chases you out, you come across the scarezone of La Llorona weeping for her children. They pushed this on the advertisements over the Vampyre House, why I will never know. It was a pretty big let down, with ghost children running around trying to scare you.

If the scarezone puts you to sleep, you’ll be right where He wants you in the next maze. The notorious Freddy Krueger is back in this new vision of Nightmare On Elmstreet where you see his world, the preschool, the highschool, Nancy’s room, and other familiar scenes from Springwood in the new movie. The sets are very well done, but I’m still a fan of the original Nightmare on Elmstreet editions.

The last main Horror Nights thing to do upstairs is, of course, the Terror Tram, where the legendary tram takes you and lets you out on the back lot. This has always been a thrill, featuring such big names as Jason, Leatherface, and Freddy. This year the theme was Chucky’s Revenge, with a huge hand from La Llorona. Besides the usual things they do to it each year to enhance the back lot (i.e. lots of dead bodies and Psycho with Normal Bates) the rest, sadly, was a disappointment and wasted a lot of space. La Llorona wasn’t scary and the Chucky guys were a little less than horrifying. Although the idea of Chucky being responsible for the fire there so long ago was really funny.

Downstairs more chainsaws, drawn by the ever-haunting Saw Pigs, come after you. The Saw maze awaits as you make your way through the fog. It’s became last on our to do list because of how similar it is to the previous year it was done and, of course, the horrible smells are sort of overwhelming. Although it’s cool to see a few updated traps and realistic set designs, I recommend it for first timers rather than frequent goers.

It is a fun night that keeps your heart pumping and you guessing what’s around every corner, nonetheless.

Remember, the crowds usually hit what they see first, then make their way to the bottom, so the lower lot is more packed later, leaving the front houses less full, with the exception of House of 1000 Corpses! Also, if you scare easily and show it well + happen to be female, they WILL chase you! Just a warning =]

Hope to see you guys there this weekend!

Horrific Dreams!

Greetings from Lippy land, another great weekend has passed with lots to tell!

I took a day trip down to Hawleywood barber shop (at 2234 4th st) for the true old school experience! This men-only sanctuary offers the best in rockabilly and classic cuts but also caters to guys like myself who know the meaning of, “It’s not just a hair style it’s a way of life.” Hot towels, straight razor shaves and barbers who dress like gentleman gangsters gives this place I vibe that has to be witnessed to understand! I decided it was time for a slight change and chopped the back of my Mohawk, going for the classic “shark fin” angled sharp and tight! Jimmy hooked it up and I was stoked with the result.

4th st has a cool strip of Vintage and alternative shopping that’s worth a trip, and I was soon cruising for new Lip Service accounts, meeting some great folks, making some contacts, then heading back to Hollywood for a night at Clockwork, drinks dancing and good times!

Saturday I hit the Redwood Bar downtown for the Chop Tops from Santa Cruz, a great little bar with an old school “Barbary Coast” vibe that also hosts a great Sunday afternoon country/rockabilly scene. The Chop Tops raised the roof with their brand of revved up rockabilly and I got a chance to meet and hang with them before and after the show. At one point Sinner, their towering singer drummer, helped break up 1 of 2 fights (one a girl fight) out front before their set. I think it just pumped him up, as he was a madman on the stage, and everyone left sweaty, and stinkin’ of PBR!

Dragged my ass out of bed early Sunday morning and took a road trip out to Big Bear for an early season day of snowboarding! Had a blast and me and my girl Angelic brought our friend Reptyle from Hawaii, who got to see snow for the first time on his birthday!! Great day! Cant wait for the season to really kick into gear.

Back to the adventure this week finds me hard at work with the Plastic Hassle team designing the new Service menswear line catalog. I went from sales, to model, to writer, and back to more sales by the end of the day. Had another meeting today, where the graphics artist Jason Redwood unveiled the next batch of Service designs. I’ll keep you posted when the first 4 designs are up on the retail site and, let me tell you, the next 6 are badass!!

In regular Lippy news, we are preparing for a trade show in Hong Kong, then going back to the Halloween & Party Expo in Houston Jan. 23-26th. The Expo is a great costume and Clubwear show we have not done for at least 5 years. We are getting ready to introduce our new packaged costume line, that we will feature at the show along with our classic costume and dress-up styles. After that, Magic in Vegas, then on to London for the London Edge trade show. Sometimes looking at the calendar can give me anxiety but then again its exciting and all part of the adventure we call LIP SERVICE!!!!

I threw in a couple photos from my band Jetboy’s gig with Alice Cooper which I finally got today courtesy of Danni Valdez at Shutter to Think photography and as always he did a great job capturing the moment.
Have a great week, and remember…..

Countdown to Halloween Birthday Weekend Begins!

Hey party people! Well, I survived the Alice Cooper show and The Pismo Moto session with the boys and I’m now suffering through the week, counting the hours until my birthday party weekend begins!

The Alice Cooper show was packed and my band Jetboy took the stage at 8 o’clock and completely destroyed it, delivering one of our best sets to date! Great sound and lighting with a huge stage, and we were treated great by Alice and his crew. Alice put on a great show and at 61-yrs old showed no signs of slowing down or mellowing out! This tour features many old classics such as opening song, “Schools Out,” “18,” “Only Women Bleed,” “Welcome to My Nightmare” and many others. And Alice is killed three times during the show – (guillotine, hanging and lethal injection…)! He took the time to hang out with us at the end of the night to chat and told us he enjoyed our set. We got some fun pictures with him and he also signed my original “Welcome To My Nightmare” LP.

I was back to work on Friday still reeling with excitement from the mid-week party, with piles of work to catch up on. After a long day it was straight home to rest up for Saturday’s excursion up to the Pismo Beach sand dunes for some pure adrenaline riding! There were six of us from the Lip Service crew and on our 250 and 400 cc Quads, we spent four hours blazing through the dunes.

We blasted over every sick jump we could find and organized some race courses to compete against each other for the sheer rush! Only one of us got hurt (not too bad), and I crashed one time leaving my quads steering bent, although I roosted it for the rest of the day anyway! Great day and great bonding experience for a group of us that have worked very hard to develop the new “Service” menswear line in a matter of weeks, in order to make the deadline for Spring delivery. We all got to know each other a little better and just enjoyed the “Dude” thing! Pismo is a beautiful place and makes for a fun exciting day. I highly recommend checking it out!

Well I’m off now to get ready for a photo shoot with my brand new Psychobilly band, “Cold Blue Rebels,” featuring members from the Zeros and Glamour Punks. Formed only 2 months ago, we will soon be ready to start booking shows, but more on that next week!

Until then -  keep it sleazy, work hard, play harder and remember…Fashion+Music=Life!
