Dollyrots On the Road through the Northwest & Back in LA!

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 by Dollyrots

Our last update left us in the beautiful, green foggy heart of the Pacific Northwest! We had our fair share of coffee and great crowds. Our routing was a little crazy, so our first show back in the states from Vancouver was Portland. The crowd was steamy and the show was a good straightforward rock punch. One strange guy came up and groped my leg for the second night in a row and I had to remind him that it was Portland (strip club central) but he was at a rock show. I also got my first beer of the tour thrown at me, which made the show even more intense and kick ass. Overall, the crowd was super sweet and sang along to a bunch of the old songs, which is always nice.

After Buzzcocks’ set we headed to the famous Voodoo Doughnut next door. We got a voodoo dozen and I had a huge chocolaty peanut buttery vegan delight! Luis got one that looked like The Simpsons’ pink donut and tasted like bubble gum, complete with a piece of bubble gum attached. We ended up leaving a bunch of the donuts on Buzzcocks’ bus and they were gone by the next day.

After Portland we headed back up to Seattle backtrack-style. We played at El Corazon, one of our favorite usual tour stops and then had the next night off to get to Oakland. Lucky for us our hotel was on Fun Center Drive next to a go-cart track and batting cages. Probably freaks out some families when a rock band shows up, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. Nights off can be dangerous… this time I even considered getting a lower back tattoo!
Almost got back tattoos!
Finally back in California and the Oakland show started feeling like we were getting closer to home, with lots of good friends showing up and helping us drink our beer. Our dressing room was more of a disco than a place to get dressed. But even that was just a taste of what LA was going to be like. As much as it is good to play for the hometown fans and see friends, LA is always a crazy hard night. The shows are great but the before and after are super intense! There’s always so much catching-up to do with friends and our business peeps. And then there’s the thought that if I wanted to just run out the door I could be in my bed in a few minutes!

Club Nokia was the biggest venue of the tour and the energy was just as huge. Buzzcocks killed it as usual and we had a nice little party on their bus after the venue shut down, followed by an after-after party at my place. All I really remember is watching Smurfs at 5am with the sun about to come up. So LA was amazing and my bed was bitter sweet. I think it might be easier to stay in a hotel next time we hit LA mid-tour; maybe I’ll get more sleep. We woke-up in our little homes and then headed to Anaheim the next night. After getting through the crazy Disney security (which was almost more hardcore than Canadian immigration) we headed to the House Of Blues. AWESOME venue, except when you slip on pickle juice in the elevator:
CAUTION!
Last night brought us to San Diego. We saw the “Naked Gun” boob-shaped nuclear towers on our way and I wore my captain’s hat for the show. The crowd was SO MUCH FUN! Tons of singing along and dancing… it did not look like a Monday. That’s for sure!
Nuke Boobies!
Just hit a Chinese Buffet and are ready for the beautiful Saguaro cacti and blue skies along our drive today across the desert toward Texas.

Only a week left of this tour then a couple weeks and we’re out again! Thanks to Lip Service for our bad ass wardrobe and thanks to you guys for reading! We’re easy to keep in touch with and will have lots more stories to share as things get going with our new record coming out on Joan Jett’s Backheart Records in August. We’ll be around the US a few more times this year and are hitting the UK in October. Come say “HIHIHI!”

The Dollyrots: On the Road with the Buzzcocks in their Stretch Fuck’n Jeans

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 by Dollyrots

We, The Dollyrots, and our pants have been on the road for a good long 2 weeks. This is usually a good marker on tour. You realize you might have to wash (GASP!) your precious jeans, didn’t bring enough socks, and have no idea what day of the week it might be or, for that matter, whether it’s 2010 or 2007 or 1994. For our time with you, Luis and I will tag team entries as we remember them. We’re aware a lot of people do it in a kind of diary style but to be honest… we don’t really have days, just chunks. I think it will be more fun if we give a little story here and there because, believe it or not, some days are just like the last.

We’re on a tour of North America with Buzzcocks. Yeah. Crazy. We thought our booking agent was setting up an elaborate April Fool’s joke when she called March 31st to ask if we’d like to do the tour. But then… it actually happened and it rules. They are exactly as I hoped they’d be when I was screaming along to “16 Again” as a 16 year old in a little cow town in Florida. We’ve been lucky enough and done this long enough (10 years) to find ourselves playing in the midst of the people who inspired us to start a band. And it will never get old. (WOW we just pulled into a weird Raytheon lot and had to convince security we just wanted to turn around, what is Raytheon? Military Industrial Complex-Seeming?).

New York was the most eventful night so far. There was a bomb scare and for about 20 minutes of Buzzcocks set we thought we might actually have to play to fill time so no one would leave the building. We didn’t end up playing, but that wasn’t the end of the excitement. After Buzzcocks’ set they let everyone leave the building through the back door. Problem was, we were parked right in front of the venue. I could see Quito’s (our road dog) head in the passenger seat wondering what the commotion was about but we were not allowed out the front door. The “bomb scare” car was only a few yards from us. Here’s the New York Post story… read and enjoy. Not all nights are that exciting but almost.

Here are some random pics… wish we were writing you a book, but next week… Canada! If we get across the border that is…

We moved on to Boston afterwards, played a sold out show for some of the most amazing people you can possibly meet, watched an amazing set by Buzzcocks, and tried to get 3 hrs of sleep in advance of crawling across the Canadian border the next day. We’re currently bumping along the road on the way to Montreal, passports in hand, ready to show we’re not completely bats to random folks that may search our van only to find a Bunny suit complete with Creepy Bunny Head.

It was guys from Guns N Roses who helped put Lip Service firmly on the Rock N Roll map back in the day. So, it seems so very f’n appropos that, in the year we’re celebrating our 25th birthday and looking back into our badass past, the guys from Slash’s band should stop in to gear up for their latest tour! Todd Kerns and Bobby geared up with Lip Service jeans and some tasty selections from the new Service Collection. Check out their kick-ass sound and killer Lippy gear as they made the talk show rounds …

Bloody Knuckles, Bruised Thighs, and Broken Hearts…the Road to Texas

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 by Rachael Rine

see full size in gallery below

Whenever you get home from a tour, everyone begs to know what “really happened” out there. Your best friend down to your favorite bartender all ask for the inside track. They need the stories you’d rather take to your grave. They want a glimpse of the glory. Everyone craves just a little taste of the kill. They want to swing on the fringe with you for just a moment before landing back on safe ground. Want no more, fashion fiends I’m here to scratch your itch. I tempt you with a sneak peak into the filthy looking glass of the Rock Roll road. I will warn you, it can get a little messy.

I will first give a bit of advice to all of those out there sitting at home punching a clock while your better half is “god knows where” doing “god knows what” for little or no money. Your lover may come home crying “it’s so hard, I’d rather be here with you than living like an animal”. They may tell you they hate it on tour and rally your sympathy. Remember this: they are lying. This is how we ease our guilt for having too much fun. Is it tough out there? Definitely! Is it fun? More than you can fathom!!! Those of us who choose this life would rather be on the road than anywhere else. When Rock & Roll hunger is in your blood, you must feed. We ARE the animals. The road IS our home. The insanity IS our way. We ARE the circus and this big top just destroyed Texas.

We headed to Austin to play the Texas Rock Fest during SxSW and from the moment we rolled into town, the mayhem began. Motorhead was playing Stubbs in honor of the premier of Lemmy: The Movie . Watch the trailer and watch the whole film when it’s released. There is a lot to learn from this man and what most don’t know how funny he is. I’m always a sucker for a good laugh and Lemmy was kind enough to invite us to hang out on the Motorhead bus for a while with him before taking the stage. I love listening to his stories, he truly is one of a kind and one hell of a kind!! Thanks Lem! The show was insane and the Motorhead fans were even crazier. The night spilled over into some bar down the street where we ran into friends from from all over the country. Even the lovely Miss Shannon Sleaze of Gasoline Glamour was there. There are parts of the week that were a bit foggy, but how could I forget the insane rock & roll jewels from GG?!

The next two days the festival was booked with early Lip Service comrades like Faster Pussycat and LA Guns and up and comers like Crank County Daredevils, Lady Jack, Dirty Pearls, TLV, Denko Jones and many more. It was great to hang with all of our friends we love and adore and all the new troublemakers that jumped on board. We took over the streets of Austin. Hell was definitely raised but don’t fret, we buried the bodies where they’ll never be found.

The rest of the tales are left to be told by the pictures. They shall remain nameless to protect the guilty. After all there is a code of touring – “what happens on the road – stays on the road”! You didn’t really think I’d reveal ALL my dirty little secrets, now did you? However, I will leave you with one piece of advice. If you ever wake up in the middle of the night with your guitarist palming your face and screaming, just roll over and go back to sleep. She’s just having a bad dream and you can laugh about it over bloody mary’s in the morning. Until next time underground lovers & style freaks.

PS- You may ask yourself, why Bloody Knuckles & Bruised thighs? Well, it is a lot of physical work and they just come with the territory especially when you’re clumsy like me. Broken hearts? Yes many were broken… mine by missing the Michael Monroe shows in LA and Austin. I’m going to go drown my sorrows in “Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks” now. Xxo

Prima Donna – Back in LA, Rocking the Key Club (and Stretch Fuck’n Jeans)!

Monday, March 1st, 2010 by TheWebMistress

see full size in gallery below

LA’s Prima Donna, who went On the Road through Europe (then Asia!) in their Stretch Fuck’n Jeans supporting Green Day, are back home! We (the Webmaster and I) went to their homecoming show with our photographer hats on to watch them lay waste to the Key Club Saturday night. An awesome collection of supporting bands got the crowd warmed up for a killer show. And Kevin, Aaron, David, Erik, and Daniel gave the capacity crowd just that, a kickass set of glam-punk-infused rock n roll that pulsated with raw energy.

Here is a juicy taste of the show photos. Check out the full set at the PH photo page.

It’s officially freezing!!!

Thursday, February 18th, 2010 by Greg Harbour

Hellllllllllllooooo!!!

Sorry it’s been so long since my last blog, between being internet-less and breaking my iPhone while I was skating, I have been unable to blog! On the other hand the skating has been rad! We went to North Carolina where the park was in an enormous shed which didn’t provide any heat. The park ruled and the locals were wicked nice and they even had veggie burgers for the starving vegetarian on the trip!

Next we started driving up to Maryland where we got caught in that crazy snow storm and we got stuck on the highway for 3 hours! It was actually pretty fun though, we wandered around on the highway havin snowball fights between all the other cars that were in a dead stop. We had to skip our Maryland stop and go straight to New Jersey and skate one of my favorite parks on the trip at garden skate. After the demo, the shop owner introduced me to Mike Judge who was the lead singer of a late ’80s hardcore band, Judge, which if you haven’t heard you need to check out!

To check out all the photos go to 1031 Skates Tour Page

Tune in next week To hear about the last leg of the trip!

Meet Greg Harbour – Skater, Punk Aficionado, Candy Fan!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

Yeah, we’ve taken a little break in the action On the Road, but we’re screaming back with a fucking vengeance! We’ve followed around a few bad boy rockers, guitarist for hot goth band Crüxshadows, funky Green Day opener Prima Donna, even a rock violinist, but not really anyone outside the field of music. So we though it was about fucking time we did. Mind you, we’re still all about blazing, rocking music and the people who create it, but it was time to play on a different stage … or shall I say park?

Our next victim … *erm* blogger … is Greg Harbour, who you may well already know and love if you dig some killer skating. If you know Greg, kick ass! Enjoy the next few weeks riding along with him as he does his badass thing. If you don’t yet know Greg, here’s a little taste to get you in the mood for the madness we’ll be bringing your way as Greg takes over this little corner of the ‘zine and goes On the Road With Stretch Fuck’n Jeans. We are expecting some crazy-ass shit going on guaranteed … you’re not gonna want to miss it.

First, a little video eye candy … Greg’s part in Null Skateboard’s “Null and Void”

Greg’s part in The Denver Shop’s “In Full Color” – You also get some brief footage at the start of when the tricks don’t go so smoothly before checking out how Greg really rips it up.

We had the chance to ask Greg a few questions and this is what he had to say for himself …

LS: I read that you just graduated college. How hard was that to do with touring? And … so we’ll be cliché here … what’s your major?

GH: The hardest part of touring and going to school is actually going back to school and getting the semister started again, i enjoy learning but being on a skate trip is one of the best things ever so getting motivated to settle down and do school work was the hardest thing to do.  And I majored in Political Science with a minor in Native American Studies; i figured i’m a pissed off punk rock kid and i just wanted to know more about why i’m so mad!

LS: Please tell everyone dreaming about touring, what it’s like being able to travel and skate? What has been the greatest moment of realization that it rocks to be you?

GH: Being able to travel and skate is bloody amazing! Basically we wake up, drive to a demo, skate and repeat, or when were on street skating missions we just wake up and skate, I love it.  The craziest trip i’ve been on was when we went to the Caymen Islands last year to skate the black pearl, that is one of the best parks ever and when you’re not skating you can go swimming in the ocean!!!

LS: What is your favorite trick? What’s the holy grail trick, the one you dream of doing?

GH:Double miller flip front disaster to back smith revert kickflip to fakie

LS: You have some totally badass taste in music. Which one band of your favorites is the one that makes you want to strap everyone down and make them listen? What song of theirs would you play first?

GH: That is such a hard question, there are so many… Prolly “I’ve Had It,” by Black Flag.  I know its typical but that band is so good, but heres a few bands everyone should listen to

-Negative Approach
-Tear it up
-Void
-The Rites
-Knife Fight

There are so many bands that are overlooked

LS:  What do you think is the most important or interesting thing to know about you?

GH: I really have no clue… basically i skate, go to shows, listen to records, hang out with my lady, hang out with our dog, drink a ton of coffee, and eat waaaaaaaaaay too much candy!!!

Greg had a chance to send us an initial shout out from the road, with the subject “It’s bloody cold out!!”
“Soooooooooo… We just started our winter tour for 1031 skateboards, its wicked fun and wicked cold! So far we’ve only had 3 demos and all of them have ripped! Were on tour with a legendary punk rocker Bill Danforth who rules, he’s been talkin a bunch about how he grew up with the guys in Negative Approach! He’s got a bunch of rad stories, Were gettin ready to skate another demo in like 10 minuites so i gotta go but i promise the next update i’ll send a bunch of photos in so you can see me sucking in full color!”

Join us each Wednesday as we join Greg On the Road! In the meanwhile, here’s some more eye-candy!

Ciao Bella!!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 by Cassandra

DSC4175_2fcI’m kind of amazed at the fact that somehow my last tour entry and Prima Donna’s last tour entry are from the same amazing city.

DSC00128Zurich is awesome, and completely beautiful. Being from Florida I’m definitely not a huge fan of cold weather but when it started snowing little flurries today I couldn’t help but clap my hands and dance around like a fool.

Not that it’s any different than how I usually behave… J

This week has been one big drive and one big adventure, I’m glad that I could share it with all of Lip Service before the holidays!

We played two shows in Italy this week, one in Rome and one in Florence, both were well played and we all had a lot of fun; and I had the privilege of visiting Venice on one of our days of, where of course I had to get a Venetian mask! We spent all day trekking around Florence and visited the Duomo, the Academia, and the Uffizi. The Academia houses the original of Michelangelo’s David as well as some other unfinished works of his.

DSC00154The Uffizi is something completely different and totally awesome, filled to the top with Da Vinci, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and Rafael. You can tell that I paid attention in my humanities classes, yes?

In short, life dream come true. AND I ate REAL Italian food. Completely delicious!

The next set of dates are all in Germany and then on to a Happy Christmas with the Cruxshadows.

And so, with great love and faith, Happy Holidays to all the fashion addicts, and remember: If Santa’s beard doesn’t look real, you better check.

All the best,
Cassandra

Holly Jolly Holidays!

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 by Cassandra

DSC09451It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The holiday playlist has made it’s debut on the iPod in the van and most everyone has broken out their heavy coat and scarf.

First off, I think that London is probably my new favorite place on earth except for the driving on the wrong side of the road that I’m used to. Our show at the Academy was awesome, great crowd and staff.

My Lip Service jeans are definitely getting their wear on stage, I’m lucky that I’m not too clumsy because if I was, I’d be begging for another pair right about now.

We met up with our friends from Deviant UK in Liverpool and then continued our eight show streak into the Netherlands where we played the Winterborn festival with the Dreamside. Rogue made a special guest appearance with the band, performing “Open Your Eyes,” which he recorded with them in 2005.

There has been a collective cold circulating the group and I have definitely sneezed more in the last three days than I have in the past three weeks.

Our new video for the Quicksilver single has been released, many thanks to Marc Shahboz for producing it! It’s definitely awesome and was a lot of fun to film. I’m adding a photo from the video shoot so you can see what I had to dance on…:-)

After a lovely day off that we spent first travelling, and then on an outing to my first Kris Kringle market. It’s an open air market with lots of artisian crafts and knick-knacks that open all over Germany for the month of December. Note to self, Nutella crepes are the best treat ever.

Tonights show is in Nurnberg and I’m hearing the last beats of Ayria’s closing song, so it’s time to start throwing poses and taking names.

Until next time, all you fashion addicts!
