Jetboy Rocks the Viper Room!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

Jetboy rocks the Viper Room - Mickey Finn's corner in the Lip Service webzineMickey is one busy cat this week, so I’m here to hijack his column (but just a little bit *heh*). For those of you who missed it, Jetboy tore it up at the Viper Room, supporting their new disc, Off Your Rocker! (available via iTunes). Of course, there was no way in hell the webmaster and I were gonna miss it, so we thought we’d grab a little something for those of you who couldn’t make it that night. Sadly, policies at the VR prevented the webmaster from getting some video of their kickass show, but I did manage to brave the rainy H’wood night, crowds, drunk club girls, and an over-exhuberent smoke machine to plop you right in the middle of the front and center action.

ENJOY!

New Video: Cold, Blue & Beautiful + LOTS of News!

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 by Mickey Finn

Hey party people, hope you’re all enjoying a fabulous week!

Things for me have switched from high gear to warp drive this week! But, as they say, I guess I’ll rest when I’m 6 ft deep! My schedule for March and April is starting to look ridiculous, with Lip Service sales trips 2-3 days a week throughout Southern California, then heading up to Northern Cali, and out of state to Arizona, Washington, and Oregon … all by the first week of May.

Add in shows with my band, Cold Blue Rebels, every weekend including St. Patrick’s day @ the Roxy with TSOL/DI/DR Know, Bakersfield with the Mentors/Voodoo Glow Skulls, 3 dates in Vegas, and a bunch more, plus a showcase with my other band Jetboy @ the Viper room to kick off the release of our new EP that came out on March 2nd and as I said … no rest for Mickey!! AND THIS JUST MIGHT KILL ME!! Hahaha!!

At the same time, I do love it!! I have an appointment with one of my favorite LA stores tomorrow, Forgotten Saints on Melrose. If you have not checked this store out, please do. I could spend a fortune in there and they carry a great selection of Lip Service styles!

I am super-excited to say that next week we will get a visit from Michael Monroe and Sami Yaffa of Hanoi Rocks!!! They have a new band together and are playing a couple dates in LA. Old friends of mine and Drew’s (Sami played bass in my band Jetboy), we will hook them up with new LS duds for their tour and take some photos for press.

Today I had a visit from Todd Youth (Danzig, Motorhead, etc.), who was scheduled to be in Michael Monroe’s band but, as I learned today, it didn’t work out and he is instead heading out on tour in Ace Frehely’s (Kiss) band! He hooked up some LS clothes for the tour and brightened up the girls’ day at the warehouse!

In LS news, if I have not mentioned it, we will debut a brand new lingerie line at the ILS show in Vegas in April. The group will consist of 10-15 pieces and first glimpses are Hot Hot Hot!!! Also we are happy to welcome back to the sales staff Bryn Thomas, who left us a few years back and has returned to take over the east coast and mid west territory. We worked the Vegas show with him and he is fun to work with and an asset to our team.

Big thanks again to Jim and Mich at Plastic Hassle for the great job they did producing the video for my band Cold Blue Rebels, which is now on Youtube and will be posted on the LS site as well!!! I should have some great photos next week from my band’s gig this weekend @ Universal Bar and Grill and the Mike Monroe shoot but, untill then, here’s a few fun ones from home with my girl (and LS model) Angelic and our pet Dragon Malakai, who is getting soooo big at 2 years old that she can barely hold him any more!

Till next week work hard play hard!!

Lip Service Invades Bar Sinister for the Cold Blue Rebels Show!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by TheWebMistress

The Cold Blue Rebels utterly rocked Bar Sinister Saturday night! Lip Service webzine was there to snap as many photos as possible, film some video, and rock out to some badass phychobilly. As expected, Mickey Finn and the rest of the Rebels (Danny Dangerous on stand-up bass, Joe Normal on guitar, Spazz Draztik on drums) have put together a tight set of kick-ass songs. (Check out their tracks at their MySpace page.)

The night started with some drinking, meeting Cold Blue Rebel and Lip Service friends, and chatting while we met new people and snapped pics. Then, Constans took the stage to announce the show! The guys kicked into a raging set of brand new songs (they’re only a few months old, so it’s all new!) backed up by the sexy zombie coffin dancers.

Mid-way through the set, the dancers joined the throng to give out some Lip Service swag bags, which went damn fast! Mickey gave some CDs out from the stage and you wuld have thought they were cash from the rush of people shoving to grab a disc. Seriously, I was barely able to get a photo for all the shoving I was subjected to up front!

After their set of original tunes, the guys kicked into a wailing rendition of Folsom Prison Blues to wrap up a killer show. The crowd was screaming for more. I have to agree … I can’t wait to hear what they come out with next!

All in all, it was awesome night to kick off the new year with a fucking bang! Hope those of you who joined us had as good a time as we did and those who couldn’t make it join us for the next one. Cold Blue Rebels are definitely a band you want to see live! Keep your eye here on the ‘zine (and Mickey’s Corner) for new dates.

See you next time!

Check out the stage photo galleries from the Cold Blue Rebels show!

Welcome, Metal Sanaz, Our Newest Writer on the Blacklist!

Yes, you read right, Metal Sanaz is bringing backstage rock reporting to the Lip Service webzine! She’ll be keeping us up to date on all the happenings in metal and sharing some stories of her travels and experiences (and maybe dish a little too). Should be one hell of a ride. Sit back, relax and get ready for Stripped-down Metal: The Scene Behind the Metal Scene (starting December 30!).

A little about Sanaz:

You all know that Sanaz has been a regular Lip Service model, rocking our newest gear season after season. But do you all the other kick-ass shit she’s been up to? During the past five years, Sanaz has carved a niche for herself in music, video, and new media within the Metal/Hard Rock scene. The popularity of her online content has received over 6 million views, 1,000,000 (yep, that MILLION!) dedicated fans on Myspace, and gave her the opportunity to serve as the Official Host of Myspace: A Place For Metal.

She has also co-hosted the HD Live web casts of Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution Tour and Operation Myspace in Kuwait, which included Disturbed, Pussycat Dolls, Filter, and Jessica Simpson. Her hosting duties have also taken her to several military bases, a Dimebag Darrell tribute show in the mid-west, and numerous Heavy Metal and Hard Rock events throughout the world. She has recently embarked on a partnership with SyncLive that will include an Internet and Social TV platform for her interviews and other industry content, up to date Metal/Hard rock industry news, contests, other VJs content, and an online community for the Metal &Hard Rock genre.

Sanaz keeps pretty busy and seems to be just about everywhere there’s something important going on in the metal/hard rock scene. That’s why we thought, “Why not give our readers a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes.” We’re stoked as hell to have her as a regular correspondent and hope you’ll give her an awesome welcome to our band of Blacklist writers.

We had a few minutes to turn the tables and ask Sanaz a few questions of our own.

1) How did you get into heavy metal promotion and interviewing?

The idea came about when I got an offer from Hollywood music TV. They contacted me on myspace and asked if I want to interview the metal bands, I told them right away that I am not a journalist and that I am just a fan. They didn’t care ! They said how about if you interview Otep tomorrow night? and I was shocked and just said okay ! haha… from that day on, the fan base started getting bigger and bigger and the bands started showing a ton of love to what I was doing, so it changed my life…

see full size in gallery below

2) What was the first interview or show you did that made you think, “Fuck! I’ve made it!”

Oh I still can’t think of it that way. I owe it all to my friends and fans on myspace. Seeing them support me and back me up all the time was the point that I thought I am doing something good. I always thank them for that, cause if it wasn’t for their love, I would have stoped long time ago :)

3) Who could you meet that would still make you feel like a teenage fan-girl?

Well I already met Kerry King of Slayer and also Iron Maiden, those 2 were on the top of my list but now, I want to meet Rammstein! I think I will go crazy :)

4) If you could go back in time and interview anybody, who would it be?

go back in time? Ummm, I think I got everyone that I wanted, but looking to the future, there is still a lot of bands I would love to meet and talk to

5) What was the first album you owned/bought?

The first album I owned was AC/DC and Black Sabbath. I stole them from my step dad ;) don’t tell him… hahaha

see full size in gallery below

see full size in gallery below

6) What is the album in your collection do you think people would be the most surprised about?

I have a ton of those! I listen to any style of music. the only things I am not into at all is rap and country… other then that, I love Madonna, cheesy 80′s dance music ( I don’t dance though! )lol, and lots of stuff like Enigma and Dead can dance and so on… if it moves me, I like it

7) For readers who have not gotten to know you yet, how would you describe yourself?

Well I am Persian, That usually freaks people out. I love relaxing and having tea with friends and talking. I talk a lot! Pretty much I am a very normal person even though my friends say that is not true. Love everything in black, my house my clothes my life. I live in a apartment that looks like a Halloween night every day. even though dark things are a big part of my life, I consider myself a very nice person. As long as someone doesn’t piss me off to a point of seeing blood, I am there for them. I usually get very mad a lose it every 4 years! hahaa… then I get it out by doing something real stupid, and I am good for a nother 4 years to come ;)

8) What are your must-have fashion basics?

Pants and Tshirts are my everyday look, but I am IN LOVE WITH LIP SERVICE clothing! I am not just saying that cause we are doing this interview on LS, but I really mean it. Top that with red lipstick and I am happy as fuck !

9) Describe your all-time favorite piece of clothing.

Picture Halloween without Halloween. Trench coats and sexy tops, Combat Boots and a pair of pants that complements the figure. mostly in Black or blood Red, or a very old worn out pattern.

The one coat that I am wearing every day now is the Red Lip Service DOUBLE BREASTED LONG MOTO JACKET… Ahhhh I LOVE IT SOO MUCH!

10) What do you have coming up in 2010?

There is lot going on right now… I have a 2 US tours that I will be announcing soon, also my very own line of clothing with Lip Service ! OHHHH YEAH! I am fuckin excited about that and we are working on it. I think people will love it… the idea’s were great and its in process… Also I may start my own record label… I really want to help them bands and make sure they are taken care of.

There are soo many bands I meet when I travel and some are very very very good! So we are going to introduce them to the world and get them were they need to be. I will be updating everyone as we go, so I would love for my friends to check back all the time for more news….

Check back for Sanaz’ first feature on December 30th!

A Freak’s Guide to Being Thankful!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 by Mich Masoch

FlipOff_filteredOh, sure, there will be lots of lists all over the damn place about what all the boring-ass vanilla super-sunshiney people are thankful for coming into tomorrow’s show-thanks-by-stuffing-your-face fest. But who fucking cares about some asshole gushing over the kids they shove up your Facebook stream every fucking day anyway or the oft-posted-in-all-his-cutesy-pet-glory Mr. Fuzzy or what the hell ever … or *GYAH! … the endless meanderings about how very thank-fuuuuuuulll we should be for whatever mundane bullshit.

Well, I AM thankful … but for (at least I think) a slightly more interesting, eclectic, and … well, naughty list of fabulousity.

Warren Ellis

If you have not been introduced to the King of graphic novel jaded cynicism and glorious vulgarity (not to mention the weirdly funny and nasty one-frames “Edison Hate Future” and “Watson Hates Holmes“) go check him out immediately!  His Twitter stream has become so infamous, there is now an actual Warren Ellis twitter generator. (Arse eels to all involved!) This is also the genius who created Transmetropolitan‘s Spider Jerusalem and gave him awesome lines, like: There was a time when I liked a good riot. Put on some heavy old street clothes that could stand a bit of sidewalk-scraping, infect myself with something good and contagious, then go out and stamp on some cops. It was great, being nine years old. His latest project, being the kick-ass human being he is, is FreakAngels, with free updates every Friday.

William Shatner

Is there a finer examplar of unbridled and unapologetic cheeztasticness in all the world? I think NOT! From the original gloriousness of Rocketman, to the god-awful TV shows, to his recent game show in which he ordered models over to poles to DANCE and OF COURSE the commercials, Shatner has a fine sense of humor about himself and the cult of personality which has grown around him and is a hero of epic proportion to any and all who can’t get enough ham-fisted, bloated semi-acting on a grand scale. Oh, and the “singing”! Enjoy this lovely tidbit of Shatnerificness lent to Jarvis Cocker’s “Common People” with Joe Jackson.

john_waters_hair_dryerJohn Waters!

What self-respecting dirty stinking perverted freak does NOT adore the King of the Fringe, Baltimore’s Pride and Joy (or not … depending on who you’re talking to), John Fucking Waters. Beside his awesomely freaky movies, the man I like to think of as The Perverted Uncle I Never Had has also done some really fantastic spoken word. This Filthy World is equal parts insight, hilarity, and (of course) filth. Check out everything you could possibly want to know about the man and his work at Dreamland.

Larry Flynt

Ah, Larry, the patron saint of perverts and cranky bastards everywhere! I fucking LOVE this man! Not only has he built an impressive empire of awesome smut, he’s been there all along the way to fight for your right to see and read whatever the fuck you want. He’s hoisted holier-than-thou douchebags on their own sordid petards. And, all the while, he’s done it with quirky panache! Thanks Larry!

Finding everything you need for photo shoots 1 block away

How can a freak, especially one who likes to shoot lots of of sexy and gory photos, not absolutely love having latex, zesty mint blood, fangs, and everything else one could possibly want in walking distance? Add to that, a remarkably knowledgeable staff, who know everything one could ask about pretty much everything they carry, and you have a shop you never take for granted! Thanks Hollywood! Here’s a taste of some of the lovely stuff we did recently with goodies from our favorite toy store (photos by the Circus Hooker Smut Regime … painless decapitation by Wicked Illusions)…

Last but not least … how could any article of mine be complete without some lovely, naughty images to send you on your naughty way into this holiday weekend?

The Resurgence of Pin-Up!

Any and all of us sick to fucking death of seeing an endless array of starvation victims masquerading as hot babes can thank our lucky stars for the re-awakening of pin-up style. Curvy girls in saucy poses, a wink and a smile, and the lovely suggestion of invitation was something missing in other eye candy. Some of us want to be seduced, intrigued, lured … not bludgeoned with obvious and gratuitous. Thanks to The Pin-up Files for these gorgeous images of some of the classics and a few artists we may not have disovered otherwise. Check out their impressive 3-part gallery of some of the best pin-up art the web has to offer!

Well, there you go … stuff to be thankful to have as a mental escape from the spectacle of being forced to watch Uncle Skeeter ask some poor schmucky kid to “pull his finger” one more damned time.

Happy Thanksgiving to US freaks and … well … Happy Thursday to all of you outside our food-coma-addled borders!

LA freaks, come by Bordello Bar Saturday night to join the WebMaster and I as we catch some bad-ass psychobilly, compliments of Mickey Finn and his new band, Cold Blue Rebels!

Gothic Charm School Book Tour – The Last Stop!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 by Jillian Venters

JillianVentersI have not succumb to cabin fever since the last thrilling installment of the Gothic Charm School tour diary. No, not in the slightest, because good heavens, the past week was busy! There was a cupcake-festooned confab with one of my photographer friends about some entertaining projects we’ve been plotting. (Muah-ha-ha!) There was a phone interview with the lovely Rachel over at Glass Of Win on BlogTalk radio, which was one of those fun conversations with someone you feel like you’ve been friends with for ages, even though you just met them. Then there was the slightly fiscally irresponsible shopping venture that resulted in the purchase of a new pair of Fluevog boots. (Only slightly fiscally irresponsible, but still. Perhaps not the wisest thing to do when one is job-hunting.) Plus there was all the catching-up-with-real-life boring stuff, like laundry and cooking and so on.

But on Saturday, it was time for The! Last! Stop! On the Gothic Charm School book tour! A signing at The Dreaming Comics and Games in Seattle, a store run by two very dear and long-time friends. They turned the signing into a tea party, with mint iced tea, cucumber sandwiches, and Russian tea cookies.

Clovis would rather have the Russian tea cookies that are off-camera

Clovis would rather have the Russian tea cookies that are off-camera

(Goth challenge: can you eat a Russian tea cookie and not scatter powdered sugar all over your black clothes? The rumors that this is one of the initiation rights for the Secret Goth Cabal (that doesn’t exist) are completely unfounded. Trust me.)

The signing was a relaxing, catching-up-with-friends sort of event, with the occasional person I didn’t know wandering by, looking through the book, and exclaiming “Oh, this is perfect for my (daughter/son/cousin)!” (I signed a couple of books that afternoon with a “To —–, you have a charming parent, and I hope you enjoy the book!”)

Note the wary expressions ...

Note the wary expressions ...

The catching-up with friends included seeing two of my favorite photographers and persuading them to hold still while I aimed my phone camera at them. They very kindly didn’t laugh at me, and didn’t even make any horrible faces. Another nice surprise was seeing a friend who had moved to Japan two years ago; I teased him that it was very kind of him to travel all the way from Japan just to come to my signing.

(I would love, love, LOVE to go back to Japan, and even more so if it were for something related to Gothic Charm School. Alas, so far I have not been able to make that dream a reality. Previous trips to Japan included fun things such as visiting the breathtaking Osaka Aquarium, where the largest tank holds 5,400 cubic metres of water and is home to a whale shark and manta rays! But I want to visit all the wacky theme restaurants, like the Vampire cafe and Alice In Wonderland restaurant! Someday, someday …)

I met Autumn, a very talented artist who had recently moved to Seattle from the Bay Area. Her illustration style made me think of what would happen if Alphonse Mucha had done manga, and her personal clothing style is a perfect example of that punkish, Deathrock-gypsy look that I always wish I could carry off. Yes, I’m quite serious. I’m happy with my gothy-Victorian cupcake style, but there are times when I see the fabulously fierce Deathrockers and sigh longingly. I have friends who swear they could transform me into looking like that, but I have my doubts. I suspect I am too much of a cartoon character to look that vampishly predatory.

But speaking of being a cartoon: look! A reader sent me absolutely darling fan art! She even gave me teeny-tiny fangs, which makes me look at my shelves of vampire fiction and giggle.

With teeny fangs!

With teeny fangs!

So what’s next for me? Oh good heavens, I don’t know. Writing. Job hunting. Finding myself in the middle of wacky hijinks, that’s a certainty.

Thank you so much, Jillian, for sharing your adventures with us! ~The WebMistress

Gothic Charm School Tour Diary: Innocente Seraphim!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 by Jillian Venters

JillianVentersYou would think, wouldn’t you, that going to a convention a mere 20 minutes from home would not cause me any packing anxiety. But because the plan was to stay at the hotel, decisions about clothing and packing the Giant Suitcase O’ Doom were involved. We chose to stay at the hotel because of the simple fact that my Gothic Charm School panel was scheduled for noon on Saturday. While there was a faint chance I could have been awake, dressed in my best frills, and fought the traffic on 520 to be at Innocente Seraphim in time for my panel if we stayed at home, it wasn’t a chance The Husband and I were willing to gamble on. So off to the hotel we went!

Due to assorted last-minute scrambles, I turned up at convention registration right before they closed. After chatting with some of the con staff, I collected our badges, then went back to the lobby to check in. We trundled our luggage into the elevator, and I pressed the button for our floor. Which blinked and did not stay lit.

You didn’t hit the button“, said The Husband, who had been looking elsewhere. He pressed the button for our floor … and had the same thing happen. Up, up, up went the elevator, and stopped on our floor.

The elevator doors did not open; instead, the elevator went back to the lobby. It turned out that there was a key reader in the elevator: you needed to insert your room key, then press the button for your floor, all before the elevator started moving. How very … security-minded of the hotel. But we made it to our room, unpacked, and then met up with some friends to get some dinner before it was time for Gothic Lolita Bingo.

Hello, let us pose for you.

Hello, let us pose for you.

Yes, you read that correctly. Gothic Lolita Bingo. The Husband decided he didn’t need to attend this fun-filled event, so he waved as my friends and I wandered off to find the meeting room.

Gothic Lolita Bingo really was bingo. Someone in a frilly dress, calling out bingo numbers, and all of us staring at our bingo cards and muttering “Argh! No, one letter over!” It was surreal, but fun. There were people in ruffled skirts and charming hats, there were people with exquisite dolls sitting on the table in front of them.

(An aside. The “ball-jointed dolls” that were the other part of the focus for the convention are a particular type of doll that have a bazillion points of articulation, and generally look like they’ve stepped out of the most beautiful anime you’ve ever seen. They are a somewhat pricey hobby to take up, what with cost of the dolls, the outfits for them that can cost the same (or more!) as full-sized clothing for people, and the endless possibilities of different wigs and eyes you can change on the doll. These would be the reasons I have not succumbed to the BJD hobby, no matter how longingly I stare at some of the vampire dolls.)

The prizes for bingo were eclectic. There were some Gothic Lolita accessories (and a skirt, which I didn’t win, drat!), books of manga and anime art, assorted cookbooks (don’t ask me, I didn’t understand it either. But I won a nice Cajun cookbook, so maybe I’ll learn to finally make gumbo.), and BJD accessories. Upon winning a doll wig and a set of eyes in a box, I turned to my friends and said, “I feel like I won a tiny serial killer starter kit.

Saturday morning(ish) is a bit of a blur in my memory. There was being woken up and presented with a cup of precious, precious coffee and the flurry of getting all dolled up and tracking down some breakfast, and then, off to the vendors’ room. Well, first off to the separate vendors’ room for Baby the Stars Shine Bright, one of the best-known Japanese Gothic Lolita fashion brands.

Oh, the frills!

Oh, the frills!

Yes, BtSSB was a featured guest at InnoSera, and the convention attendees were delighted to be able to have a chance at seeing their wares in person. I saw a lot of very pretty, ruffly things in their boutique, but nothing that had the winning combination of being in my size and being something I was willing to suffer the sticker shock for. The same could not be said for the room with the rest of the vendors, where I found some pretty clothes that fit me (because really, I needed another pink Victorian-esque blouse and a black waistcoat, yes I did), and chatted with old friends and new people, all of whom were in extravagant clothing.

The Gothic Charm School panel went extremely well. I was a little nervous, because this was the first reading event where the audience wasn’t primarily Goths. But advice for Goths can also be easily applied to other subculture types, including Lolitas dressed up in white and mint green ruffles. For some of the panel attendees, this was the first time they had heard of me or of Gothic Charm School, so I was delighted when several of them came up and complimented me on the book and the panel.

After my panel, there was time for browsing through the doll boutique, with much sighing over the gorgeous resin creations. And I, erm, helped a friend make up her mind that she absolutely needed to take advantage of the convention-only special offer on a particular boy vampire doll and two outfits for him.

Fangs!

Fangs!

After that bit of extravagance, we ran off to the fashion show for Baby the Stars Shine Bright (oooh, the ruffles! Oooh, everything from their Alice and the Pirates style group!), and then scampered off to a charming tea party. I feel that every convention should have at least one tea party, because who doesn’t like little sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and tea? (Oh fine, I’m sure there are all sorts of people with perfectly valid objections to all of those things. I still think any convention would be vastly improved by the addition of a tea party.)

om nom nom!

om nom nom!

That evening was the masquerade, which turned out to be not really a masquerade as I’m used to at other conventions, which are costume competitions. No, the InnoSera version of a masquerade involved attendees turning up in the ballroom, and then … being taught how to dance basic steps of the cha-cha and the rhumba, by professional dance teachers. No, I don’t quite understand it myself, but it was all sorts of fun. Okay, to be honest, I tried to sit out the dance lessons, but one of the convention organizers spotted me and carted me out onto the dance floor.

Sunday was, as the case for most conventions, low-key. The fashion show starring convention attendees displaying the different types of Lolita fashion was very clever (even if there wasn’t enough Pirate Lolita for my tastes), and a panel on designing your own Lolita skirts gave me some useful sewing information. Then it was time for one last whirl through the vendors’ room, in order to pick up a chibi-style caricature I had purchased. (I looooove chibi-style art, and had wanted a chibi!Jilli picture for ages!)

Yes, I am a cartoon.

Yes, I am a cartoon.

Innocente Seraphim was a weekend of frilly, frivolous fun, and was astonishingly well-run for a first time convention. I’m planning on attending it next year, even if one of the organizers informed me that I was going to be in the fashion show next time around and that I shouldn’t argue with her …

Innocente Seraphim was also the last traveling-someplace event on the Gothic Charm School book tour! (That I know of, at least. Who knows, I may get an email tomorrow telling me that a convention somewhere wants me to be a guest.) That doesn’t mean I’m not busy, though! I have an interview coming up, a signing at The Dreaming (a Seattle-area comics and games shop which is run by some of my favorite people), and talking to photographers about some projects. Which means that I won’t have time to get cabin fever, right? Come back next week and find out!
